I have a terrible time with my digestion.
Research says it takes 6-8 hrs for food to make its way through the intestines, yet less than 30 minutes after eating something greasy, it has worked it's way through the system and has evacuated.. Same with coffee and oatmeal in the morning. Bacon, ham, sausage, all tear me a new one, so to speak.
Quitting coffee completely would probably be a good move but I'd hate to give that up.
Any help?

Have you had your gall bladder looked at? Do you drink a lot of beer? Do you worry a lot? These are all common problems that will create the symptoms you have.

Wow. A lot of people would consider that a good thing.

Change your bad eating habits. You know what is doing it,so quit eating the greasy junk food.
Eat nuts and similar high fibre food.

Digestive enzymes are good things . They aid in proper absorption .

Companies make different kinds , but I prefer Nature's Sunshine , in pill form . Amazon sells many types .

Probiotics like Greek Yogurt , etc . help a lot in decent gut PH too .

As people age , it is said that they need more help with replacing digestive enzymes .

That along with taking good care of the teeth , cascades in health into the whole body .

I did start on some probiotics but got out of the habit of taking them. I'll try that some more.

The only good that probiotics do are to put the proper good digestive track microbes in place. They have to feed on what is there and if it is crappy, greasy, processed food (stuff low in fiber) they just die out and the nasty ones that can handle the crap are the ones that increase.

My suggestion is start everyday with a good bowl of old fashioned rolled oats with millet and flax seed. No sugar, but put some fruit on it to make it taste good. Use lactose free milk with it or natural unsweetened yogurt. Eat fruits that are high in pectin (pectin is the best water soluble fiber out there). Get lots of green veggies in your diet like kale, spinach etc. Also make sure you are getting some aerobic exercise. Everything is connected.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Gary, no matter what you do, it would be a great idea to go and get a really good probiotic and take it every day. There are loads of good bacteria that should be in your gut and if that balance gets out of whack, it can cause every form of digestive upset. The best probiotics are refrigerated (Walgreens carries one in the fridge behind the pharmacy counter) and will contain loads of living good guys that belong in your gut.

I should mention that I started taking them as part of my Lyme treatment because the tons of antibiotics kill everything in your gut, including the critically important good bacteria. I feel great, but the patients who don't take the probiotics during long term Lyme treatment end up even sicker. If you happen to be taking antibiotics for anything, they will kill the living contents of the probiotic if you take them too close together. I take antibiotics all day, but take the probiotics on my way to bed at night, at least a couple hours after the last antibiotics hit my stomach.

If that does not fix your problem (and it very well might), it cannot hurt. It can only help and position you better to get over anything else that might be wrong. Good luck!

Amen. It could be a problem with your gallbladder, but even so a diet change can fix it. Changing diet is hard to do, but well worth it. The caffeine in coffee also acts as a bowel stimulant. Increase fiber, fruits, vegetables, cut fat, and increase water. You will notice a difference. May take a bit for your body to adjust though.

Gary, next time your at the docs, have them run a blood test for celiac disease. That sounds worse than it is, but it can tell you if your at risk for it or not. I developed it about twenty years ago, and all you have to do is eat "gluten free". While it's a pain, it's much bettwr that hitting the screen door at twenty paces! The blood test can tell you if your a cantidate for it, then they tell you to get off the gluten, then to confirm it, you need a biopsy of the small intestine. And yes, beer is the worst for it.....unless you drink gluten free beer! Contact me if you want any additional info!
