I have his coyote video,if you like old school you'll love it.I find it one of videos I pull out and watch over and over.He makes a comment at one point that "this is bush trapping".You can tell he learned from old woodsman, his sets are not original,I remember reading about them as a kid in the '70's and they were old school then.He took them and added his own flair and kept them alive.I heard he took some heat on this video from some new school trappers about his methods, shame on them.

I personally have bought all of Thorpe's videos/DVDs and think they were pretty darn good. He was as the gentlemen mentioned old school but he did know how to work in competition if you read between the lines. I took instruction from Thorpe and found his area in NY was a lot like mine. He as criticized by a few as mentioned. Never been a statue build for a critic.
His methods were simple, and fast.
If anyone can point out to me something new in actual trapping other than traps and modifications that has been invented in the last 50 years I would like to hear about it. Old school? Good Lord it is all old school if you know the history of the game. I know there are plenty that think they invented the freaking dirt hole, but alas they did not. Nor the flat set. Nor the step down (another variation). Nor long lining. Just different management techniques and variations of methods. Not much new.

I really liked his first mink video, but don't think it's available anymore? I lent it to someone and lost it. I don't have all his videos, but like the ones I've seen. John had a different approach to canine trapping when I went on his line with him (off season) He would pick out key locations like most, and then move back into the woods to make his sets. He used a lot of draw stations to make up for not being dead on location. He was more concerned about hiding the catch than being exactly on the typical crossing.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I have seen a couple of his DVDs and enjoyed them both. His book "50 Years a Trapper and Treasure Hunter" was really interesting as well.
Mr. Thorpe lived a life many of us can only dream about. I regret never having gotten to personally meet the man, and wish I would have made time to have gone to him for instructions.

mac,,,im 60 years old, and the only "truly innovative" (in my opinion) set that came to light during that time, was ken smythes bottom edge set. I visited with ken a few times about mink trapping in general, and it pleases me that most writers use his name when referencing this set. theyre giving credit where its due. everything else has been a variation or progression of the old methods, in my opinion. Fossil2, I agree completely. I felt that Ken smiths bottom edge was incredible innovation too. I should have mentioned that great set. Almost mentioned that. A couple of times I have mentioned it the past, the "experts" came out of the wood work and claimed they had been using that set for "years". LOL You know how trapping forums go. But I do agree with you. The bottom edge set was and is a unique new set. And a good one. Great to see you posting my friend. Mac

What exactly is "old school?"

The so called bottom edge set was used here as long as any other set long before it was named the bottom edge set.We called it a point set or the pinch set or a tee pee set. This set was used by trappers for beaver otter, mink and rats with footholds, even in fairly deep water long before bodygrips were invented. It is not much different than a den entrance tee pee set which can also be used with footholds. When used with footholds it was known as a tee pee set because of the several crossed poles used to fence vertically as well as horizontally. In the old days people who grew up on the land depending on the animals knew their habits well and always used it to their advantage to take them. There are several old sets that take quite a bit of fur that are not commonly known outside of certain geographical areas.

There are a couple of coyote videos out with Thorpe,I believe the first one was called "coyote instruction",thats the one I have,if you buy it I don't believe you'll regret it.Its definitely not your "here's how you make a dirt hole, here's where you put your lure",etc etc etc.Snore.I kick myself for always saying I'm going to take instruction from him and then not doing it.One of the best in my book.
