Hey all. I've been discussing a relocation from PA to a slightly more southern locale. Currently I'm the Operations Manager of a non metal surface mine(aggregates). I've been browsing different companies and spoke with a gentleman from Martin Marrietta. I was wondering if anybody here was familiar with the company or the field in general. I'm was hoping to get some feedback from personal experience with the mining companies in that region. Typical payscale for operators/foreman/maintenance etc. I figured this would be a decent place to ask as you guys and gals seem to be from all walks of life! Thanks for any responses!

Are you dead-set on the SE? I have a few friends who work in the aggregate industry in western Washington; business is booming. I know one guy who hasn't had a day off in months. Gravel is Washington's #1 mineral resource. A kid I know works in a pit loading trucks, I think he's making in the mid 30's (per hour) plus benefits.
It's pretty much impossible to find competent workers in the region. I have a friend who works in management of a major HVAC outfit, he says the labor shortage is so bad they've nearly resorted to hiring junkies.

Fairly set on the south east to Southwest. I'm sick of rain 3/4 of the year

I haul out of several Martin Marietta quarries around here. The guys working for them seem to like their jobs. Their rock is pricey. They've been buying all the established quarry's they can here to limit competition.

They all do that Danny. Many just buy them to shut them down. There is a lot of politics in the rock business. Saw it first hand when worked for Cessford Construction in south east Iowa. This area there is no limestone to be harvest. Has to be shipped in around 100 mile so we use river rock which doesn't pack nearly as well and washes away quick.
