Just recently I saw a picture of a banded coot. I thought that was interesting so i looked into it more and apparently the gov't bands a lot different types of birds. I talked to a friend who says a friend of his told him coot are one of the "most" banded birds. He explained why he said "most"; it is because they band them every year but no one shoots them so in a sense they are one of the "most" banded birds. i am curious if anyone had any information on this or if anyone on here has seen or shot a banded coot.

If you are considering yourself to be someone of influence and importance, just try ordering someone elses dog around sometime.

i have looked at this. the number says 7,000 out 0f 3 million bands but my question to that is whether the 7,000 is banded coot that have been reported or if it it total number of coot ever banded.

I've had more than a few Duck hunts turn south into a Coot Shoot, not bad, breasted out and fried in Bacon Grease. Don't recall any banded birds tho.

When I lived close to big Lake Butte des Morts in Wisconsin we harvested "Mudhens" during the open seasons when duck hunting. I never had a banded bird. They are fine eating when fried as BigBob mentioned.

Where I live now on Lake Ontario my only duck hunting is with a camera, and I enjoy shooting Coots when I can catch them. They are small and all feathers. Though not very colorful, they can be photogenic wearing black. grin

Camera Gear: Canon EOS 7D-MK-II, Canon EF-S 10-22mm, EF 28-135mm, EF 100-400mm and EF 400mm lenses.

I will attest to the fact that coot are one of the most favorable tasting fowl around. Acorn fed woodies and white fat widgeon barely top them. Mid 90's canvasback were surperb off Lake Christina. Depends on how hungry you are I guess!

Do some research on Coots Unlimited trapperoscoe.
