School consolidation was the final nail in the coffin to kill small towns in my area. With some of the small town school rivalries dating way back it makes for some ugly adjustments for all involved.

I think another major problem with our education system is the curriculum itself. What's being taught does not fit all kids.

I always said there is book smart and than there is hands on smart. Big difference between the two.

The hands on kids are the ones getting left behind and its not their fault.

Wind the schools back 50 years and teach the basics and bring back the hands on classes so many schools have gotten rid of.

Truth is the hands on training is where common sense is developed.

All you teachers , friends or family of teachers , or those who have borrowed the thought that " teachers are heroes" havent stated one positive effect this illegal strike will have or has had on students or tax payers .

Will more money for teachers equal higher grad rates ?

They turned down a $ 6,000.00 annual raise to hold out for $10,000.00

Is there a difference in benefit to the student and tax payer between 6k and 10k ?

ADC , nice short bus jab ! lol ...................you must be one of those wife moochers BuckNE was talking about ....... grin

Most adults understand the purpose of a strike. I'm surprised you don't.

Back to school for you. laugh

Maybe your right but to some of us we refuse to be carried through life by unions and politicians.

Think about what all consolidating schools involves. Without much thought, off the top of my head here's a few of the big ones ...
1 -Busing students further. A kid that lives blocks from his school bused 30-45 min one way every day. Means parents have to get them ready earlier, takes an hour to hour and a half out of their schedule a day.
2 -Larger class sizes. Less individual time and less learning opportunity for the students.
3 -Teachers fired. (gee, wonder why they don't support that!) Fewer classrooms means fewer teachers needed.
4 -More kids = more competition. Meaning its going to be tougher to get into any extracurricular activities. Which build kids mentally and physically.

I'm sure when my wife gets home from teaching (20+ years) in a small district, tonight, she could add exponentially to the list.

Brother , not every little , bitty community needs a K-12 school . And a classroom of 25 kids won’t kill anyone.

Rural schools can have their K-8 , everyone attends the same high school .

I wish Oklahoma , and that’s who we’re discussing here , would follow Missouri’s example.

BTW, the competition argument was awful . Life is a competition , that lesson might as well be learned early , too.

Actually they are NOT being left behind like they used to be. This is what keeps many other kids from further advancing their education. You see when teachers have to deal with the slow book learners, instead of sending them out to other classes, they can not push the fast learners to their full potential. Same for the kids who act up. You can't just kick them out of school, or put them in special rooms, they are required to be included in the classrooms which not only makes the teacher's jobs harder but distracts and detracts from what the other kids can learn.

Teaching these days is to prepare kids to be able to solve problems with methods as opposed to training them certain skills. This is the type education kids in other countries are learning that you all claim are so much better because they rank above the US. BUT at the same time they only test their good students, the ones that struggle are sent to other schools or just out of school. It's another example of making the polls fit your agenda.

Nope. The big problem was the parents that didn't want to forget about the past.

My only argument on this thread was just that a lot of teachers are under appreciated by most and the education system is a mess. Not saying that I agree with the protesters. And in my area it was sad to see the schools close.

Stupid parents produce stupid kids.
Stupid parents produce more kids than smart parents.
Stupid parents don't hold their kids responsible for learning(or Behaving).
The are more of these stupid kids in our schools with every generation.
Add the break down in discipline, largely because stupid parents refuse to discipline their kids, or let the schools do it, so the education of the kids with good parents suffers.
Finally, stupid parents take the easy and dishonest way out by blaming somebody else. ..........And here we are.

ADC, quit with the “anti teacher” rhetoric ! We’re anti teachers asking for more money while NOT holding administrations accountable for stupid spending ! They , Oklahoma teachers are wanting raises by way of taxes without looking at the bigger picture.

ADC I understand your point to some degree. I can only hope less kids are being left behind but I think more are than what is admitted to. When kids are left behind they act out and give up in some instances.

Today curriculum is to advanced in some areas for the average student. And the bigger the school the bigger the problem.

Most kids today graduating can't even do basic math in their heads. That's a major breakdown.

Parents and including myself can't help the kids do some subjects as things have changed that much. I see math 3rd and 4th graders have and the terminology is like reading something foreign. I have even called the teacher on it and they to are just as lost. How can they teach if they to don't know.

I will take a hands on kid over a book smart kid any day.

Truth is i think we are trying to hard to keep up with statistics from other countries. Use K thru 12 to teach basic studies and overhaul our colleges to teach the advanced stuff to the kids that actually need to learn it.

College education is to much about the money but that's another topic altogether.

And this would slow way down if the left was put in check.
