Fellow trappers,

I just got a cell phone for the first time. I feel filthy owning the thing because it represents much of what I hate about our modern culture. But I need it if I'm going to continue one of my volunteer activities.

Anyways, now that I have this chain around my neck, I might as well learn to use the putrid thing. I guess I must first have a Google Play account to download any apps (I DESPISE Google!). Once I get my Google Play account, what are some useful apps to download?

I figure you trappers and sportsmen probably use your smart phones in a way that would appeal to me. So what do you do with your phones?

I'd like to get some kind of gps app so I can mark spots or see where I am on a map. I don't know what all else the thing can be used for.

Thanks for any suggestions/ideas

I use huntstand app for deer hunting. Its free and you can tag locations, stands, plots and find out where you are at the moment on the GPS.

If you're looking for a gps app try WAZE. It's free and works great.

strelok this is a ballistic calculator app they have a free and a mid and a pro version I liked the free one well enough that I dropped the 12 dollars on the pro version to get the rest of the features

Beep-N-Go this is a free app you "load" your rewards cards and such into , I mainly use it for the Piggly Wiggly card because you get points for purchases and that takes money off a gallon of gas at the local station , you choose what card and take a picture of the front and back as the app asks then when your at the store or the pump you open it up and it puts the barcode big on the screen swipe it over the scanner and beep and your good to go , the girls at he pig think it's cool and my wallet is thinner. I even put my library card in it

Keep , this is a list app my wife makes a list for the store on her phone or at her computer and it is updated to my phone and I can pick up what is on the list

I also use the phone for photos , email and callendar I can pull up my and the wifes email so if we were emailed the directions for some place i can pull them right up.

your bank likely has a banking app , my wife does most of this but I have it set up so that when someone hands me a check I open the app take the picture of the front and back and bam it is in my account so I can't loos the check and I don't have to drive to the bank. next time I need cash I go see the girls at the pig and buy a gallon of milk and take out cash with no fee.

if you have not already , password protect your phone , you sort of have to stop thinking of it as a phone and start thinking of it as a very small personal computer that you carry with you and can make a phone call from.

many of them let you use a fingerprint also , make sure you get more than one finger set up , when your hands get all cracked up in the winter thumbs crack more than other fingers and stop working.

a single AR mag pouch works to get that smart phone out of your pocket and on your belt where it has less chance of breaking the screen.

another word of advice as a guy who came form a flip phone , I could open my flip phone and choose one of my first 3 contacts to call and never have to look at the phone while driving , that is not possible with a smart phone , you have to set up voice dialing to dial while driving , so you push and hold for a 3 count then say call wife cell.

A friend of mine had an app that you point your phone at the stars and it identified an drew in the outline of the constellation you are looking at, best use of a smart phone instead of some texting face book drama. Bob

A handy app to have on your cell phone is "Colornote". It is a free note pad app where you can write notes to yourself, reminders, list things to do, do shopping lists, etc., and you can choose the color of the note. I have it and use it frequently. If/when you download the app, a Colornote widget/icon will appear on one of your phone's widget pages. You can drag and drop that widget on any screen you want. To use it, just tap the widget/icon and the notepad will open up. Very easy and handy to have. The website has the download, tutorial, FAQ, etc. Its only for Android operating systems though.

iHandy Level App it is free. I actually loaded this App when building a small shop at the ranch. I forgot a level one day and got looking and loaded this App. I used it instead of a real level and worked great for the entire project.
