With spring finally appearing to be right around the corner ive been getting excited for spring crappie fishing. I haven't got into spider rigging, but last year I started vertical jigging brush piles as my preferred method of catching.

I have a 12' slab daddy rod now but because of the depth variation I fish im looking at getting a 16' model.

Can anyone recommend me a good 16' rod.

And for the fun of it lets here some crappie catching talk....

Last year I crushed fish on a electricchicken.com colored baits. (Neon pink and chartreuse) either bobby garland or strike kings. If you haven't tried vertical jigging crappies you are missing out. Way less snags and very efficient way to pick apart a brush pile.

Crappie talk is never off topic. It's already started in parts of the country. Sorry can't help you with a rod, I use basspro microlight rods but they don't come that long. Thanks for the tips and good luck.

I’ve spider rigged with 16ft BnM bbjp and love them but they would be hard to jig with all day. To heavy

We have a son that lives close to the lake we stay in his camper there at his house works out great visit fish have time with grandchildren. Nature threw us a curve we are in the area that is suppose to get 6" of snow today. We do the spider rigging and long lining we are staying a little longer this time going to get back home in time for opening day turkey season.

We don't get into all the fancy rig setups,or trophy fish, just a canoe, some rods, net, tackle and it's a day on the water. I'm sure when they get older they will try out all the fancy rods and reels. Hopefully they realize it's the one operating the rod and real that makes the difference, and they will still catch fish if they know what they're doing. Never needed to buy 16', 17', 18, or even 20'+ rods to catch crappie, believe that's a preference/application thing. Not too worried about crappie seeing us on a canoe, the kids do a number on them jigging with a float and jig, and we eat well when they go out and spend a day on the water. I enjoy watching these two out in the outdoors doing what I believe they like to do. They're ready to hit the water again!

Besides having a blast, this is the payout.

I'm catching a few through the ice by my house right now but it is a slow and inconsistent bite. I can't wait for open water but it is still going to be a long time here before that happens.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

If you haven’t fished multiple vertical jigs, you should try it. A buddy showed me how. Make 2-4 surgeons loops spaced 18”-24” apart. Look at depth finder and let out that much line. Slowly drift over em. It’s like cheating when he does it. It’s ridiculous. I’m still learning, but I have caught good numbers. He limits out many trips

Most people don't think of fast flowing rivers for crappie fishing. In the spring when they make a run, those jokers will stack up at dams. Wear them out fishing two jigs and casting. Lots of times two at a time.

Drilled through 3 feet of ice last night but caught ten Crappies under it. I used 2 foot rods in my spread.

That plate does look awesome. I am cooking up my last bag of crappie for dinner tonight. Have already taken the boat out once this year, but it was still too early. Can't wait to get started this year. We troll for them a lot or just throw jigs around brush piles. Focus mainly on Striper and Cats, but nothing beats a good Crappie dinner.

A friend took me crappie fishing at Blue Marsh Lake a few times. I have a crappie pole I bought to fish small, bushy streams around home. He told me to leave the pole at home and just bring my ultra light Fenwick rod and an extra spool for my reel. Each time we went we got a lot of action. We used small jigs. That's where I really learned how to fish jigs.

Water is still a little cold. But forecast temps in the 50’s next week will certainly help the bite. My favorite spot is 150’ from my back doorstep. Can’t wait.
