Bought some minnows last night.
When I lived in Alabama and Georgia I bought "Tuffies" or here called Fatheads, you bought them by dozen down South. I always found that funny because they were about buck a dozen and ALWAYS counted out.
It always made me chuckle watching the guy count out 5 dozen.

Here we buy them buy them by scoop and get about 5-10 dozen for a couple bucks. Most of the places I buy minnows are self serve and only Shiners and Chubs are sold by the dozen.

Do they count Crappie minnows in your area? How much for that dozen "Tuffies" now ?

we pay 10.00 a dozen for pike shiners and 8.00 a dozen for smaller bass shiners. wish they weren't so expensive and it wasn't illegal to get your own. I'm not sure what they are charging for fatheads

Crazy price here. I trap my own if I feel the urge to ice fish. Well worth it.

used to go to a place where ti was two bucks for a big scoop of perch minnows.

Got a dozen walleye minnows up here a few weeks ago. fifteen bucks cash!

Now those are canadian prices, but still.

The prices for minnows here are insane. Thank God, we are able to trap or dip our own here or I could never afford to use them.
I looked in to getting a bait dealer's license for leeches and to be honest, it looks like they are (quietly) trying to phase out commercial trapping/netting of minnows here.

Back when minnows were easily available at good prices here, they were priced by the dozen but sold by the scoop lol. You always got more than what you asked for.

Just happy to be here.

It depends on what bait shop you go to and who is working. Women are more likely to count the minnows around here than the men. The shop I like, if you buy 3 dozen bass size minnows, usually gives you 60 to 70 minnows.

I had 1 women count out 36 minnows and 3 of them were swimming on their sides, when she put them in my bait bucket. I pointed it out and she took them out and replaced them. Some of the minnows were tiny too. I have not gone back to that bait shop.

I think Shiners were $5.00 a dozen here last spring maybe more. I always net my Shiners in the spring. I buy my leeches unsorted from a guy down the road that traps them for $5 a lbs. I won't work that hard when I can get that kind of deal.

So is Tuffy's still a thing ? It's been 25 years since I fished the Tennessee or Chattahoochee rivers

Cast a shiner towards a smallmouth on a bed. I swear they see it coming through the air!

Medium fatheads (about two inches) are about $2.00 a dozen here. Medium shiners (three to three and a half inches) are about $4.00 a dozen and large shiners (four to five inch) are about $7.00 a dozen.

I use the fatheads in the spring for crappie. I can keep several dozen in the perforated part of my bait bucket floating in the lake for a week at a time with hardly any die-off.

Shiners are fragile by comparison. You look at them wrong and they go belly up. I only use them once and a great while when the chain pickerel are spawning. I much prefer crankbaits for everything except crappie.

Eh...wot?

I think fatheads are about 2 to 2.50 a dozen now or you can buy them by the pound. That's what we normally do.

If they count crappie or fathead minnows I tell them no sale I'll go else where for bait.

You can't use live bait in Idaho except for insects.

I bought minnows last spring at a bait shop ran by a guy older than dirt. He counted every minnow. To make matters worse, he was rationing water. I don’t think I had 1” of water in the bait bucket. He said he has to carry water to the bait shop from the house 150 feet away, and that I had all the water I needed.I told him I had 30 miles to travel, and asked for more water. Nope. I went down the road and stopped at the first culvert and filled up the bait bucket.

In Pennsylvania bait dealers are supposed to count out their customer's minnows. The law says a person can't have over 50 minnows in a bucket. A boy at our church got checked by a WCO. He had like 60 or so minnows in his bucket. He also didn't have a tag with his name and address fixed to his bucket. The WCO let him slide with no tag on the bucket but did cite him for too many minnows.
