I decided to grind up some castor mixed with a little glycerin just for the heck of it and wound up with more than I expected ( a pint) . The castors were clean , dried for a few days and frozen . They were processed in a small food processor and have the consistency of a slightly loose peanut butter . Will this mix go bad quickly ? Does it need to be refrigerated ? Can Sodium Benzoate be added as a preservative ? Thank you for any input .

When I grind castors that have dried, I simply store the ground castor in a bucket with a bit of 100 proof vodka poured in the bucket to keep them from molding. I usually put a cup of vodka to 3 gallons of ground castor. I've never had castor go bad on me when I treat it this way. No refrigeration is necessary and I don't as sodium benzoate. I do cut off the saddles, which is the part that joins one side of the castor to the other. This is membrane and not castor.

Nah, no problem at all. It takes time for the mold to form, you have time if you've ground it recently.

That's how I do mine. I refrigerate without adding anything other than the glycerin. No mold yet, year and a half later. And like some have said, it gets better with age.

Also, that's what I use at castor mounds.

Yukonal , I decided to go with the bosses idea as I plan on carrying the castor in my truck for the remainder of the season . It will get hot then cold etc . I need to transfer some to a smaller container and only carry a little and keep the rest refrigerated or frozen . I will try your method on the next smaller batch .
I don't drink vodka but had some of this left so I'm trying it . I didn't want to waste the money on the Vodka lol .

The alcohol can't hurt a thing. Maybe I've been lucky. 2 batches of bait, and 2 batches of castor in the last 2 years without vodka to knock down mold...and no mold yet. Maybe I'm running on borrowed time.

Going to make 3-4 gallons of meat bait, and 1 gallon of mouse bait in about a month...and I am going to throw some vodka in. Just because guys with a WHOLE lot more experience than me, say to. laugh
