In Wi, at least in my area, it's hard to get to know the warden because they move around the state so much. As soon as ya think we get to know 1, it seems like he moves on to a different area.

I was hunting In Wyoming and as we came out there was this game check stop. We both had decent mule deer. The warden asked where we had shot them I said we got them on the west side of the road. He said no you must have got them on the east side of the road. I looked at my buddy and then said to the warden your right I was a bit confused. He returned our licenses and said have a good day boys. Thank you sir and we were gone.

Twenty years ago my younger son was 12. He shot a 4 point y buck. Where we hunt they need 3 points on one side. Back then the law said , you paid a $25 fine and the warden took the horns. You got to keep the meat. Well we called it in and the dispatcher said to meet the warden by the highway that night. We got there and the warden takes the kid in his truck and has him write down, and sign what happened. They come back to my truck and he says let's see the deer. I show him and he says I understand it’s his first buck. I said yes. The warden says that’s a shame I left my loppers in the other truck, just pay the fine . The boy was so happy he got to keep his first buck.

My only complaint is that we seem to be a training area. We have one long term warden and a revolving door of new ones. This makes it hard to get to know the new ones as they are usually gone in a year.

I made a rather negative post earlier about Washington State game wardens. Well here's a chance for some trapper who wants to be a game warden get into the field with very few qualifications. Maybe if we had some actual outdoors people as game wardens things would improve.

"Due to the lack of applicants, WDFW has decided to lower their hiring requirements for Fish & Wildlife Officer positions. For those with no law enforcement experience you can be hired with a) 2-year degree b) three years natural resource work history or c) three years active duty military experience. Those with three years law enforcement experience can apply with no additional schooling."

It’s like that everywhere. Missouri gets 15 percent of the applicants for game warden classes that we used to. It was common to get 2000 applications for a class of wardens. Now we’re lucky to get 300 applicants. Several reasons for this, with money being number 1.
The less applicants the smaller the pool of well qualified ones you have to choose from.

65 years old and have lived in 7 states. Met a fair share of GWs during my hunting and fishing career. Most were stand up guys/gals. Only had one that was a constant bung hole! It was back in the late 70s, and in Connecticut. He worked hard to find any little thing to write a ticket over. Last name was Bates. Our crew just called him Master!!!

So your saying a warden shouldn’t be allowed by his agency to trap? You’re saying because a warden enforces trapping laws that he shouldn’t be able to trap. We enforce hunting and fishing laws also. Should we not be allowed to do that as well? Where do you draw the line?

A game warden is over fur sales and land leasing? Who are you talking about?

The more wardens that trap, the better it is for all us trappers.

Especially in todays hiring process (and maybe I'm just talking locally here) where many of the new hires (again locally) have little to no hunting/trapping or even fishing experience. Its making me a bit nervous.
