I've got the itch to get a Single Six Ruger . I do like the looks of the model with fixed sights however I do want to be able hit grouse and similar sized targets at reasonable pistol ranges. Would use on the trapline as well for dispatch however it would be used more than dispatch (I can use a club for that ).For all around use would you get the fixed or Adjustable sights ? Opinions please !

Adjustable. I use shorts during trapping season and sight it in for those at 10 feet because I like to be precise. If I'm going to use it for longer ranges with 22 LR then I can adjust it for that too. Mine also has a magnum cylinder so once again a sight change might be needed.

hard question to answer had both types over the years both did there job if you truly like the way a gun looks and handles your apt to shoot it more and get more proficient with it various brands of shells will shoot to a different point of aim so you'll have a lot of experimentation to do

If you want to shoot paper targets and get those pretty little tight groups then go adjustable...In real world hunting or dispatch, the fixed sights will provide faster target aquisition IMO, and will make very little difference on hunting scenarios once you learn your revolver.

Adjustable for sure. In fact mine had adjustable and I upgraded to the fiber optic sights. Big improvement! I am fussy about guns, sights, and my shooting skills. Others may not be as particular.

Got adjustable on mine. I don't like the front sight, I would put a smaller one on for Grouse. Not my line gun and I never adjust it after I sighted it in.

You didn’t ask, but I prefer the 6.5” barrel for a longer sighting plane to theoretically increase accuracy and make shooting accurately a bit easier. And, I prefer stainless steel. It cleans up easier, and is easier to keep clean. In any event, you can’t go wrong with the single six.

Another great trapline gun is the Ruger SP101 with the 4.2” barrel in .22 of course. It is an 8 shot double action in stainless steel. Very accurate and smooth as butter. Shoot single or double action. Shoot short, long, or long rifle ammunition.

Have fun shopping.

I agree wirh firewood, I bought a single six after getting tired of borrowinfg my dad's, especially when he is following hunting. My dad's is one of the longer barrels and accurate, shoot ptarmigans in the head with it while hunting. the one i bought was the shorter barrel model. can get ptarmigan with it, i usually need to aim at the body to get them, I use it for disptaching animals, just used it today for a lynx i had in a trap. i don't use the 22 lr for it, just the 22wmr. more accurate with the magnum.

Thanks That Fool, you have experience shooting precisely. It is amazing what that extra barrel length will do to give you a longer sighting plane, let you shoot more accurately, make it seem easier to hold on target, and give you a bit more velocity. I agree with That Fool that the gun is even more accurate shooting the .22 magnum ammunition. I find that mine needs cleaned more frequently shooting the magnum ammunition.

I previously had a Single Six with the 5.5” barrel and after shooting a friend’s with the 6.5” barrel, I made the change. Big improvement.

I will gladly sell the original sights that I removed from mine when I upgraded to the fiber optic sights.

Good shooting.

If you are looking for accuracy remember a .22 mag is slightly larger in diameter than .22lr they are made to shoot both hense the reason for the larger bore. That is why they will shoot .22 wmr better than the .22lr. That being said I just bought a Rock Island arms/Armscor m14y that is threaded for a suppressor (makes no difference to me) and a very small bolt action with a 10 round mag. Lifetime warranty and seems built well. Feeds and shoots great. 119.00 I am glad I bought it. And comes with 10 round mag. Just a thought.

Definitely adjustable. I bought a Heritage Rough Rider .22 with a fixed sight that I hate. Never liked it from day one. Will have something else before next year.

When you buy the fixed sight model it is a total crap shoot whether or not it will shoot to point of aim. You can try different ammo and see if one will work but is that what you really want? The lucky folks who get one that shoots point of aim will recommend fixed sights because the gun is a bit more streamlined and because it works for them. The folks whose guns shoot 3" high and 2" to the left at 10 ft are not so impressed with the fixed sight model.

This is based on my experience with an old model Ruger Bearcat. I would love to have one of the new model Bearcats in SS with adjustable sights. I think it is the perfect trapline gun.

I have adj now but my first was,"fixed". The reason I put fixed in quotes is because the fixed sights can be adjusted.
The rear can be drifted with a brass punch for windage and the front is so tall it makes the poi low this is corrected with a file and tuch up cold blue. Drift the rear sight the direction you want the point of impact to shift. If the point of impact is low carefully file the front sight down a little at a time until you have point of impact where you want it, drop of touch up bluing and done.

And. JF. The diameter of the WMR projectile is the same as the projectile in the short, long, and long rifle cartridges. The WMR SHELL CASE is larger. In most cases you can stick a LR hull inside of a WMR hull. The WMR case is roll crimped to make up the difference between the two cases. Hope this helps.

Bullet diameter is not the same. .224 for .22 mag,.223 for long rifle.
