Who pays these new steel tariffs? Do Americans pay when they are the end user of Chinese steel? Also, who gets the money from the tariff? Does the IRS collect it? Is the tariff money offset by decreased taxes on Americans elsewhere, or is the tariff money extra spending money for government?

The feds actually relied on tariffs as one of the main income sources until the progressive income tax was enacted.

True, but now that we have income tax for government revenue, why should we also have tariffs?
The answer is.... Drum roll please.... We shouldn't!
At least, that's my opinion.

Just another tax on the consumer in the end. Also leads to inflation.

Heard today we don't get much of the China steel directly mostly through 3rd party countries like Korea in their products like cars and such (roll steel).

If people don't think that a trade war has not been going on for years try to buy anything made in the US anymore, plastics seem to be the easiest thing I can find like storage containers. Even lure bottles are coming from overseas now.

my dad was a purchasing agent for Ethan Allen furniture and proved to me on paper once that he could buy lumber cheaper overseas than the big sawmill 4 miles away.something isn't right somewhere.

Thanks.
Does anyone believe that the Chinese government (being commie and all) will absorb the cost of the tariff by discounting the cost to American consumers to remain less than the price of domestic steel, thereby turning what was supposed to be a jump start to domestic companies into just a small welfare program for the US government in the from of a tariff?
Using our form of quasi-capitalism and it's bag of tricks like tariffs in order to influence an economy based on scourge-of-the-earth (communism) is dangerous and has not been tried before. We beat soviets economically by out spending get them. It may get interesting.

It raises the price of imported steel(and anything made out of it) so the domestic market can compete. It is supposed to create more jobs at home. The reason domestic markets here cant compete with china is their low labour costs and no environmental laws.A tarrif is supposed to level the playing field. It leads to inflation when other countries retaliate. No more cheap junk from china.

The Chinese government sets the 'price' of its goods, with very little regard to costs.
Also, I have heard we are doing this to stimulate our domestic production of 'national defense' important crap, like iron and aluminum. Now, I'm not General Eisenhower but wouldn't it make more sense to keep our resources that are national dense critical in our dirt and use up there iron and aluminum until they won't give us anymore? We can import all there iron and aluminum and when the next big war happens (if we bother to declare it) we can recycle all the wizzmos and gidjits into war stuff.

Tariffs function in many ways and for different reasons by and for each and every nation or trade union etc. One of the main reasons for tariffs is to deter the buying of overseas or foreign products so that the nation enforcing the tariff will produce these items on their own soil and that will add jobs and stimulate the economy. That is the hoped for result. I believe we have waited too long for this to be a workable solution in the USA if we should do it at all and I am not in favor of tariffs as I have lived and worked in the Ag commodity business and education all my life and losing some key markets for Ag products like Canada and Mexico would be really harmful.
The other reason I feel that tariffs are not wise for us is that we have grown away from a capitalistic economy where the middle class was the driving force for the growth.
We have now created a very wide gap between the few very wealthy and the many with lower incomes. There is not enough discretionary capital in the USA anymore to buy mostly American made products as our middle class can't afford that as we have created almost a third world economy for several hundred million USA citizens and if there is not enough money to buy the same type of goods then if we lower consumption to the affordable level that will cost millions of jobs or the wages need to fall even further than they have now. With our huge need to travel to and from work and all other activities we are not situated well to lower many costs to be able to afford many products that will have significant increases in cost.

A Tariff is supposed to level the playing field by forcing the importer to raise their prices to cover the cost and bring the cost more inline with the domestic price.

Like any other tax, it's near impossible to get rid of once enacted, the income tax was supposed to be temporary.

In my opinion,we as consumers should get away from cheap mass produced stuff that is made to be disposable.I would pay $75 dollars for a kettle or toaster that was made to last a lifetime as opposed to a $10 dollar one that is made to be tossed into a landfill after a year or two.
Unfortunately most people like the throw away society.

Even us most of us outdoors-men have way too much junk that we consider disposable. Many of our European counterparts spend a lot more money on their domestically made gear, but it's generally very high quality and may be kept in use for a lifetime.

Everyone wants more USA blue collar jobs until it will cost them a few dollars.

We will be better off in the long run if we go back to producing products here in the USA. If tariffs will help meet that goal then tariff away....
