I think you were asking about this a couple of years ago. Things haven't really changed much since then.
This is what I posted then:
"Moose hunting has declined a lot in that area in recent years. Alder brush is really expanding it's range in that area making it difficult to even spot moose. I guide brown bear hunts just west of the lakes along the coast and wouldn't consider hunting moose in that area. There are some moose, but there are a lot better areas imo."

It's really no skin off my nose if you hunt moose down that way. I have a good relationship with the folks down that way and I'm not going to jeopardize it. I could donate the meat from any moose I did shoot, but that would be a lot of work just for the experience of pulling a trigger on a moose. Really though, there are a lot of better and easier places to hunt moose.

I shot a moose in 08 around there, sad to hear it hasn't gotten better.

On second thought, You do seem pretty set on that area, so here's a little advice I've received second hand. I know some guys who've done float/drag trips in a couple of the rivers in the upper end of Lake Becharof, they had good success. The main problem they had was bears, literally tons and tons of them. It was a constant onslaught.

If you stay in the upper reaches of the Refuge you should have a fairly good time.
I'm sending you a PM with the coordinates to the lake I believe they flew into, it's a short haul to a creek, then a little drag to the main river. Enter the Lat. and Lon. into the Search box on Google earth.

Is Ugashik Bob still there? I haven't seen him on this forum.

I guided a few moose hunters out of Ugashik (for another outfitter) in the early 90's. It is NOT easy country to get around in at all, much less pack moose through! Never again!

"Never again" is probably the most common remark made by moose hunters; for good reason. Learn from the experiences of others, don't find yourself in the position of ever making that remark.

Yeppers. Say that every time I finish packing a moose. And the next year, right back out I go!

I did however, quit GUIDING for moose, since it is difficult to explain to a guy who wrote a check for $15,000 that "we shouldn't go shoot that monster bull over there, since it will be a booger bear to pack it out...!"

At least as a resident/meat hunter, I can make a choice of whether to mash the trigger or not!

Pete
