Have a F 150/ 2010 with 45 k miles. Truck has been trouble free till now, developed a ticking noise, seems like front axle. I thought
Wheel hub not engaging in 4 wd, Had it checked today garage, not a dealer shop, but I trust these guys say the think it is catalytic
Converter. I am stunned, anyone every hear of this? Noise is like u hold a stiff piece of paper to bicycle spokes. Noise goes away if u shift to 4 wd, also if u let off the gas. Any help welcome!

If you google the symptoms you'll often find a lot of people with similar issues on any vehicle or appliance or whatever. It seem most issues are common to a certain year and type of vehicle.

Sounds like the actuator in the wheel. Very common.

There is a part on the firewall that controls vacuum going to the actuators. What the actuators do is engage your 4 wheel drive. It sounds like a clicking noise when the wheel turns

I bet you have a crack or a hole in one of your vacuum lines that engage your 4x4. If you look behind your front wheels you’ll see hoses connecting to the actuators. Check those lines and make sure they’re connected first, then check for cracks. It’s a pretty common thing.

I agree 100%. Very common on f-150's. In Ford brilliance they decided that no vaccuum is 4wd and vacuum is 2wd. So if you loose vacuum the actuators at the wheel attempt to engage. Have changed many of the vaccuum solenoids at the fire wall and quite a few Integrated Wheel Ends as ford calls the actuators at the wheel.

I work at a ford dealership and chuckles84 is absolutely correct. The iwe has been a problem on many F-150s. It’s a fairly simple fix.

Ok I have little more time to explain.

If the problem is in your 4 wheel drive as its a guess without actually seeing it.

There is a vacuum solenoid on your firewall behind the battery. Water drips on the solenoid and causes it to malfunction. This solenoid allows vacuum to go to both actuators which engages your 4 wheel drive.

On some if you Jack one of the front wheels off the ground and spin it you can sometimes hear the noise.

If it is bad your going to want to replace the vacuum solenoid and than actuators and hopefully the wheel bearings are not damaged as well.

And yes it could be just a leak in your vacuum lines.

Cam phase position sensor, about a 3k fix at a shop. Good luck. Common thing to happen according to my local ford dealer.

Makes a ticking sound and won't go into 4x4? They think its the exhaust? Wow.

The guys that said IWE are correct. The actuator(s) are only partially engaging, thus the teeth of the gears are just tickling each other. Vacuum leak or water in lines (happened to me after driving in deep water numerous times) are common causes. I was concerned about the ticking noise but told by numerous Ford mechanics that its not a "big deal" but to get it fixed fairly soon. In other words youre not going to break down because of it.
