Today's first day of boiling the Maple Sap from the Canvasback Maple Syrup Shack !! grin

Boiling on the new Gas Kitchen Stove was a sight to behold!!!LOL grin Even used my Grandfather's Milk pail to bring the Sap into the house !! cool

Boil, boil, and more boiling....

Until, at long last, this is what I ended up with !!!

A whole GALLON of Maple Sap, boiled down to just that little bit!!

Can someone tell me roughly what grade of Maple Syrup that turned out to be ??

Wholly crap! I almost forgot about maple sap again this year. Thanks for the reminder. I use a crock pot to boil it down. Not for sale, just for my home use. I usually make a gallon a year and thats all I need

As a rough apporoximation you need 30 or more gallons of sap for a gallon of syrup.

Scale that down and it's 7 1/2 gallons for a quart of syrup. or about 4 gallons for a pint. It looks like you got about a quarter of a pint: so a decent quality syrup from what you started with.

Remember all that steam needs to go somewhere. Inside your house, it'll peel wallpaper, or support a lot of mold.

I would not worry too much about mold. Got two 1/2 gallons of Maple Syrup on order. Just waiting for it to be bottled and delivered. This little bit of Maple Syrup was just for fun, to see if I could still make the stuff ! grin

Can you expound on this idea?
Some time and wait periods, and finnish time. Do you keep the same batch in and keep adding into a beautiful consistency?

Rule of 86...............86 / sugar content of sap = approx. gallons of sap needed for gallon of syrup.

I dont look for perfection, I just want to leave it in until it thickens and tastes good. Leave the crock on low, and keep adding sap until you dont have any more. Dont let the sap turn sour. Cook it down, or keep it in a reefer, because it only lasts a day or two if it warms up.
