I wonder if that was notice to anyone who might claim to be a beneficiary.

James, I confused as heck about it. The notice says it is to notify me that I am a beneficiary. If it were notice to anyone who may have a claim it would make sense especially with my bunch. Since it would shorten the window of time anyone had to make a claim against the estate. You’re guess is as good as mine, lol.

Without seeing the will itself, or your father's will, people here can only guess. But it is not uncommon for inheritances to skip generations when a beneficiary has died prematurely, as happened in your case. If you are listed as a beneficiary, then you are a beneficiary; it is that simple.

Are you looking at the current will? Is there a chance that your Grandfather changed his will after your father died? Did they send you a copy of the will in question, along with the letter?

Yes, they sent me a copy of the current will. It was updated after my father died. The copy that I have is current.

Your uncle inherited the assets and he is giving you the liabilities. You probably have a second mortgage now. Good luck.

Did your grandfather give you anything before he died?
My FIL had given my son all his guns. He put an addendum into his will stating that. Just like he did with all his stuff that he gave to his kids. It was mainly so that no-one could come back and say they wanted something. It came in handy when one of my wifes sisters came back and said she wanted one of the guns. It happened to be the one my son hunted with. The attorney told her it would be up to my son. My son looked at the attorney and told him he hunted with it and wanted to keep it. She wasn't happy, but knew if she contested the will she would've been given $100 and told she was out of all future talks.

James is right about this. A legal requirement to settle an estate. Been there, done that. Everyone remotely involved has to be notified.

After clearing up the questions I had, I would concur.

Yup all immediate family gets a notice. Pretty much if you are listed in the obituary, you would get a notice.

Who is the executor or executrix of the estate? Are you sure you aren't the executor and not the beneficiary?

Osky,
"An estate is generally crafted thru an attorney..."
I think you may have meant to say Trust rather than estate?? Estate simply refers to the land and other assets one had accumulated at the time of their death.

It goes to your fathers heirs. Same thing happened when my great grandma died. My grandpa (her son ) was dead so my dad and his brothers got his part.

Really , YOU DON"T INHERITE DEBT unless it is tied to property that you get. Example your parent is in the hospital for 6 months , runs up 2 million in med expenses. YES the estate is responsible for any dept but the heirs don't have to pay the balance.............People all over worried their parents are going to leave them in dept geez. I say die happy owing money . OR save every penny . miss out on life and when you die your kids or grand kids can pee it away on cell phones and video games...............

I was specifically noted as a beneficiary in the notice letter. I am not the executor.

Thank you, I stand corrected. Thinking of one and printed the other.

Laws differ from state to state, but when I asked my wife who works for a large Law Firm they said more than likely this: you are probably getting your father's share.
