I plan to begin using snares (cable restraints in our state) this year. Mainly for coyotes and cats. What brand of locks do you guys recommend? There are so many to choose from it's confusing.

Any other features I should include? I'm thinking swivels, anything else?

everybody has their opinion. I you are going to buy snares buy them from a reputable dealer. Do a lot of reading (here on trapperman). A lot of the locks are good. But you also need to keep in mind the size of the cable you want to use.

I dont use swivels they are a waste of time and money , after first wrap in entanglement they are useless . Im going to a 5/64 lock on 1/16 cable next year , closes quicker and holds tighter than 1/16 . Also doesnt plug with thick hair as the season goes on and makes for quick clean kills . Use a kill spring and trigger combination.

Being that he needs to use "cable restraints" rather than snares, a good swivel is probably an important thing to have isn't it?

Mo laws require it, if that is where he is trapping with them. If so Keef, you will need to check your regulations and see what they allow if you want to be legal. If not a good mini-camlock on a nice long snare anchored solid would be a great choice. laugh

You have to use a swivel and can't have any entanglement nearby. Break away is required. Cable length 5'. Deer stop 2 1/2". No mention of type of lock.

It doesn't specify "relaxing" or "non-locking" or something similar? Maybe "one piece" locks?

Most CR states require a "relaxing lock." In this case, Newt's new, Newt's Master Locks would be a fine choice IMO.

I hear the dakotaline death blow cams are great locks. Newt's Master locks are on my list for CRs. Since Ive started using barrel swivels my chew outs with CRs have gone way Down. Rally Hess explained not only do they keep the cable from kinking they give the coyote a target to chew. 36 inches of 1x19 5/64 then the barrel swivel then extended with 3/32 7x7 cut to preferred length . Relaxing lock of choice with BAD and deer stop. 20 yotes no chew outs...With 1/16th 1x19 1 out of 8 chew outs. All daily checks. All Korean cable for the loops..

Gary, 36" of cable is only a 11 1/2" loop max (and that is not accounting for ends).... Seems a bit restrictive???

Sorry I should have added that regs need to be followed . Im no longer a fan of mini cam locks , they plug with heavy hair and dont lock down tight enough for me .

Yes a relaxing lock is required. Thanks for all of the feedback.

Well, using a kill spring on a snare is NOT 90 % of the country !
In fact it's allowed in only a handful of states.
I am a strong advocate of using swivels on snares, as snare grass lands with no entanglement

Thanks H380
I thought as much .got heavy entanglement myself here as well they almost always wrapped up dead swivel never used.
Or just dead laying in the trail snare straight out the others depending on how they hit the end. Thanks again
