Hypothetically, if i was to use #3 jumps for coyote trapping, what sets do they work best in? What mods are needed? Thanks

At the risk of showing my age I'll relate a story from my youth.
In 79 through 82 ish the Trapper was like the shotgun news. THICK, and all trapping. Many times an excerpt from O'Gorman's books was in there as a teaser, usually followed by a full spread- both left and right pages when you opened it flat- of his ads. Like many of us I WORSHIPPED anything he said or wrote. He was a big proponent of big traps too. I couldn't afford any of the good stuff, so I got a few #3 jumps and tried my best to make them Montgomery's. Twist link chain several feet long, 3N style swivels, Myles type triggers.
I caught my first fox and coyote, plus many more, in those #3's. They were tough to bed, and not real foot friendly, but they worked. I made crude dirtholes, plus a few trail sets. The dirtholes are the only thing I could get to work back then, mostly because my trail sets looked like a well blocked cat set not the subtle guiding needed to keep from spooking yotes.
Honestly, given the quality of the coilsprings out today I'd sell the jumps- still great for under ice beaver- and get coilsprings. Not worth trying to modify either. You cant baseplate as the base IS the spring- weld on that and it is junk. No way to increase power if you tried to laminate so you'd slow down the speed by a big margin.
Just my thoughts
Tom

I don’t mind using them for coyotes. The problem is pan tension. I started just using them in step down sets where the dog has to commit a little more than usual. They work fine and regular dirt hole sets but I always used a lot of guidance. Just remember to make sure the spring ear is towards the dirt hole so they don’t have to step over it. They should be stepping over the other end of the trap. You can bend the dog up a little bit to increased pan tension, but not by much.

I have a dozen #2 and #3 double unders with adjustable pan tension in the form of a pan bolt with a wing nut to tighten. I have been kicking around the idea of coyote trapping with them and a couple of #2.5 single longs that i bought as nos.

File a Miles Trigger in them or if you want to spend a little money a PIT pan works good to add pan tension. You are spot o on the way the trap needs positioned. I'd say any set that you can somewhat predict the animals approach would be ok. I'm sure there are better traps out there but that is not what the OP asked about.

Thanks for the replies. I may have a chance to get some cheap, and thought about using them in high theft areas. I figured if the Okie men can use them and make them work, it might be worth it of i get the traps cheap enough(worse case, i can use them for mink traps)

I am not that good with the files maybe. Never felt right. I was going to get a bunch of pit pans and then I bought some nice big coils and relegated the jumps to high theft areas and giving to kids.

Once they go they are really weak. I wouldn’t be afraid to do what you’re thinking.

Here is my thoughts on the three jump that i wanna try: Cut off some of the pan on the spring lever side. Make sure there is two feet of chain. File a miles trigger on them.
A step up pit pan would be nice for jumps.
Any thoughts are welcome

Why are you gonna cut the pan? Otherwise, sounds like you’re going to have fun.

The spring does rise and touch the pan. But it shouldn't be enough to make much difference... You have to consider that the spring only rises as much as the closing of the jaws allows. So add the thickness of a coyote foot in between the jaws and you'll see it won't be as big an issue as you think.

I would take some pics and post them to show you what I mean... But my wife forgot to buy laundry soap last night so we are heading to the store.
Give me a bit, I'll try to remember to post some later.

I managed to get a few minutes reprieve while my wife does... whatever women do to prepare for a trip to Dollar General. This is a stock #2 jump. Not a #3 so there are going to be some difference in how high it grabs my "animal leg". You can see a gap between the pan and bottom of the board. That isn't from the spring pushing the pan up and moving the board. That gap is how far the pan fell away from the end of the board when the jaws clamped on it. The jaws clamp down before the pan quits falling... You can also see how high the spring rises in relation to the gap left by the board. This picture just gives an idea of the thickness of the wooden "animal foot". Not sure how thick a coyote's foot is at the "perfect pad catch" spot... So this is just reference. Mike

On the #3 I measured from the bottom of the board to the underside of the jaw... Approximately 2.375 inches.
I have no idea how much of an average coyote's foot that equates to... Never measured their feet while they were in the trap.
My gut tells me that 2.375 inches is plenty of grab.

Yes, whichever kit is for #3 and #4 longs... Kit 01 I think.
The little base plate that crimps on the cross piece has to be trimmed... Cutting off approximately a 1/2" should get you where you need to be.
I'm sitting in the car at DG. When I get back to the house I'll add a few more pics to help clarify.
