Where do you look for them? Any special places to look or check out? Ive herd people just stumble on them but i would think there is something in common for them all.

Protected areas and/or prominent features on the landscape (big tree, rock, etc). Overhangs with year-round dry dirt seem to be attractive. They can be really hard to find though and I personally don't spend as much time looking for them as routes and pinch points.

One of my favorites, although I have yet to catch a cat here yet:

Every one I have found since I started trapping here in Nebraska is found in or near cedar stands. Not sure why but if I was guessing it’s the duff that allows them to scratch and bury. I usually start my searches in these areas and I haven’t been disappointed yet. The first ones I found were by chance but as I started to find more the pieces of the puzzle became evident.

Divide ridges and saddles, ridge tops, under ledges where it will be sandy/protected; south side of large juniper (cedar) trees; near sandy washes; prominent trees, especially where they are located at the head of a draw, or where one canyon empties into another. Sometimes they just go wherever they happen to be at.

I love finding toilets. Especially when there's no snow and no tracks (like it's been here lately). Gives me confidence in making a set.
Here's one I found and setup 5 days ago. Only a little time left in the season, so we'll see if it produces. You can be darn sure I'll have sets on it again next year.
It is on the south facing side of a short rocky cliff on top of a ridgeline. Most of the toilets I find are under junipers in the duff, as mentioned I think the cats like digging in it. My findings go right along with what Jump, Rick & Laz are saying.

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Are toilets usually in the same spot every year?

How often do cats revisit a toilet area?

Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes......
Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

Thanks guys! This helps out alot. With our snow i have yhought about following cat tracks if they are near thicker brush and seeing if it leads to one. Not sure if there is one ever mile or to or what tho. I have acess to alot of ground on a 4 mile stretch of creek with high ground and thick brush

This is great information. So, how would a person set a cat toilet like the first picture shows? Under an overhang with sandy soil year round. I found one that I believe is a cat toilet and was trying to decide how to set it. Thanks to all you guys who share your years of experience and techniques with us new trappers.

Not like I did Hobbs! I made a walk thru that was more like a "step over". Adjusted it for next time. Theres a tree just out of the photo to the right if the trap that forces them against the cliff

Recently I have had success with post sets right in and around the toilet, and blind sets on the trails leading to the toilet

It was told to me that areas that "pop" out to my eyes, also pop out to a cats eyes. Before this year I had never found a cat toilet. When I found my 1st one this year, I studied it. HARD. Then I found more places like it. It was a low spot in a crop feild, were the water runs off and grass don't grow. These spots jump out and everyone of these spots I found had cat scat.

Ended up finding over 10 toilets, caught twice as many cats as my previous best season, and 85% were on toilets and everyone was on purpose. The only consistency that I found with cats was toilets. I caught them on baits, lures, urines, dirt holes, walk throughs, blind sets, turd sets, some with flags, some without, I caught cats the 1st night, 15th night and 2 over 30 nights later from set date. When you're on cats (a toilet with 5 plus piles of different sized scat) You are gonna have a chance. When I found a really good toilet, I would not leave until I took cats, or season was over.

I believe 2 things are critical with cats. #1 being on location and #2 bed that trap solid. You do those 2 things, you will catch cats.

Lures, baits, urines, visual attractors. I don't believe they are an absolute necessity, but I don't believe they hurt anything either and I do use them more times than not, but when I use a type of scent, I use high quality stuff. Weiser, Derrick, Graham, O'Gorman, June, Lennons etc, etc.

Those are my thoughts, take them for what they are worth, I am not a pro, far from it, but those are the things I found this year on my line in Mid-Mo smile

A trapline dog will find more scat in a couple outings than you will in a month of scouting. My girl really made me lazy when it came to looking for sign. The hardest part for me was to watch my dog instead of staring at the ground like I had done forever.
