I wonder sometimes if I overdo my bobcat sets -maybe not necessarily scaring them off, but simply wasting lure and $$. My typical routine is a couple squirts of urine, a couple dabs of gland lure, and some call lure above the set. I’m often re-luring every check (3 days) or every other. I guess I figure I’ve hiked back in there, might as well freshen it up.
What about all of you? How often you re-lure? More often in colder temps?

I don't re lure unless I wanna switch it up.. Only do that if sets have been in the ground a good while..

Only if a traps fired or a catch is made. If I need to change something I make a fresh set.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

IDTrapman - I'm with you, if I'm spending the time hiking into sets I want to make they're "hot". I re-lure with a skunky call lure (gusto) above the set pretty frequently, less so with the gland lure right at the set. No set frequency, but in response to the weather (usually rain and slush up here). I'm not overly concerned about scaring them off or wasting $ on lure to catch a ~$400 cat. I personally don't use much urine because of all the rain but I wouldn't be scared to use it every time.

$400.00 cat!? I need to move to Idaho!
I've never caught a bobcat, don't have a season (or much of a population) where I'm at. A little further north and you can trap them, I think only 1 per season though. It would be awesome to be able to set traps for a $400.00 critter!

When life gets me down..... you know hunting/trapping season is closed.

I set $400 worth of traps for a $5 critter lol. Kinda the same?

I don't relure either unless a catch is made.

15-20 days is more than plenty, I've gone back to pulled sets up 2 months later and critters are still working the set.

Let me sugar coat this

Although a lure may last for months it doesn't hurt to refresh the set with something different. It just may not be something that appeals to the animal at the time. So use something a little different to refresh the set. I wouldn't do it every 3 days but a little refresher here and there never hurts.

The same goes for coyotes. You'll hear set it and stay away from it till it connects. I agree, it's not good too walk up to the set every few days and mess around a coyote set. But if you have a coyote set that's been set for 10 days and hasn't had any action when you know there's coyotes in the area then hit it with something different. They probably have already been by the set a few times. They were leery at first and then it just don't appeal to them anymore. But give a quick shot of a different animals urine, lure, or bait and you'll be surprised to see a catch on your next check. I seen this several times on my line over the years. Especially when January hits and the set has been in the ground with no action, I jump out and put a small dab of coyote gland lure and the very next check I'll have a catch.

The length of time you western cat trappers leave sets at one location is incredible. But, for those high dollar cats I guess that what you do.

I haven't left a trap set more than 10 or 12 nights ever in my life. I prefer to put them in front of different cheap critters...lol

I get lots and lots of rain here so I have to freshen everything up often. The clay in the soil around here will glue the trap down once it's been bedded solid and rained on a bunch. Have to freshen it up after a week or so. I typically keep record of what lures I use at my sets since their all my own personal formulations and I like to keep up with their production. Typically if I set out a trap and once I have to rebed the trap after lots of rain, I'll go back with a different lure at that location if the it has yet to produce on one particular scent or bait.

I was just wearing out fox and coyote and cats at one property with food and skunk call/curiosity lures.. and urine..
I pulled out of there to set on some fresh turf using the same lures and baits and after a Week I've only caught 1 coyote, 1 red fox, 1 coon at a scent post with coyote urine.. and a few possums..
We have had some good rain so today I freshened up the sets, rebed traps and lured with gland lures and urine.. I'm pretty sure tomorrow mornings check will be productive.. and the first morning in a week it won't be raining.

Lure each set once a season.
