Can your pocket be partially in the water or must traps be submerged completely?

Definitely go with snares and make your own portable pocket/tunnel to set anywhere. Courtesy of Eric Space.

I used to use 3' sections of 4" black corrugated drain pipe. Easy to cut a small slot to insert a snare a few inches from one end. Very light to carry three or four to a location and you can really get creative with the placement. Put some up horizontally above the water line for rising water times, some right at water edge. Can even put half into water and leave one end out right at edge of the bank. I used dried sharpened stakes to drive in alongside the pipe. A wrap or two of wire around the drain pipe stabilized it to the stake and kept it in place and also gave me something to tie the snare off to. Used to get a lot of late season mink in these. Really low key set here in farmland area where the whole world is full of drain tiles.
And, mink use them here all the time to hunt in.
Small, fast snares and you have to play with the loops to keep from hip snaring them to avoid marks on hides.
Have fun this was a ball in late winter and I may take this back up again next year thanks for the thoughts on this.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

We can't use mink snares in Michigan. For places where you can do you have to check them every day? Thanks for any replies.

Not sure if he has any left but Don Powell trapper, DVD maker, and operator of Minktrapping.com did have Eric Space's mink snaring videos converted to DVD (with Eric's consent of course) and had some for sale. I have both of the videos on mink and his canine/raccoon one too. The instruction is top notch. And he is a NJ trapper.

Mink snare in front of a pocket set equals coon caught by the front foot. Mink snaring is best using blind sets. Pipe in the above picture is about 8 inch diameter and that is on the small side, better with 12 to 18 inch diameter pipe. Trail sets I like to find where a log has fallen perpendicular to the trail so coons and squirrels go over but mink will go under. Bank muskrat or beaver holes get set up too. In heavy snow conditions use a 2 liter pop bottle to make a tunnel in the DOWNSTREAM side of a culvert and set your snare in the tunnelmade by packing snow around the bottle

Many thanks for sharing your methods, Eric. Sure wish you were still selling made up snares-can’t seem to get a handle on loading the cable.

Here in Wisconsin we can only use snares in water. On land they have deer stops so loop can’t close far enough.
