I have fleshed and boarded coon hides, they have been drying for two weeks. They still have oily residue on them, should I wipe them down or is this something I shouldn't be worrying about?

Wipe it off with a damp rag.

Don't worry about it. Just natural oil coming out of the leather. I have never had a coon hide that had a little oil coming out of it, be downgraded. If I wiped all my coons off, I would not enough rags and I would never get done. It is a natural thing, unless you are leaving to much fat on your coons./

thats a good sign. The skin is drying causing the oil to get squeezed out of it.

I wipe mine down about every other day. For me I all ways seem to have a pad of fat right at the base of the tail

I have several rolls of paper towels in my trapping shed. That's normal for a coon hide to "sweat" while it's drying. Just wipe it down every couple days.

Remember as a kid we played army and you gave up the fort so the other side got it? Of course you don't. Little kids aren't that stupid.
