Try a chunk of moose antler. Dogs like it better than deer or elk. Might keep him busy for awhile longer, Its sold on amazon. whistle

I'd say it typically takes 2 years to be able to trust them home alone. Even then you run a risk till they're 3. Not all of them.....but generally speaking.

Friend of mine was having chewing issues with his ( wild Amish dog) until I brought him a large smoked cow leg bone. His girlfriend called to thank me for the peace created from the bone.

My 1/2 lab chewed off the window sills in her room when she was one and ate dads hearing aids a year later luckily the V.A. got him a new pair, those things are expensive. We used Kong chew toys, antlers and beef bones

Mine is just over two and have been leaving her home on her own for about 6-9 months now. Up to that point we watched her like a hawk. I bought a
new turkey rim hat that I never got to wear once and my costa sunglasses she got. Luckily I replaced the frames and lenses were fine. That is all
she got but don't leave her alone. Train hard for shed hunting and you'll just love having her with you, mine is a great companion.

My son is going thru the chewing pup phase with a beautiful chocolate now. Little dog is only 5 months old and already knows how to hunt, retrieve to the hand, is'nt gun shy, and knows the clicker, whistle, voice command, and hand and arm signals! He is sure as heck smarter than anyone I know, but likes to chew if he hasn't hunted himself half to death. I never even knew that Labs were good for upland birds as well as ducks.

I can say that every lab that I have had (9ish) has WANTED to chew. What I found was to make sure that the dog is always under your watchful eyes for the first 5-6 months. A correction every time the dog gets into something that is not allowed. This has worked for me over the years. My furniture, kitchen table and chair legs etc. are all tooth mark free and have seen multiple dogs. And make sure that they have something that they are allowed to chew on always. Correcting is easier and more trainable when you correct the bad behavior with an acceptable one.

Interesting that you mention chair legs. They seem to be a lab's favorite food.

We were able to change his chewing habits with some of those large chew bones. It helped, but he still had it in for those chair legs until he was about 3. frown

This seems to be a fact with our first hunting dog!

Keep an eye on him. As soon as it chews on something you don't want it to, grab his muzzle firm and say, NO... then take a chew toy/bone, put in in his mouth(gently hold it there if you have to at first) and praise. Watch him close and repeat every time, he'll catch on. Also put HOT sauce on things you don't want him to chew on(ex. chairs!), good amount so he gets a full effective dose. After he gets the message, just put a little dab for scent, he'll avoid it. It has worked well for me. Warning vehicle interiors are very susceptible to a lab's gnaw. wink

I see where some trainers grab them by both cheeks and raise the front paws off the ground. Seems to work for them

I wouldn't recommend this. Trainers can and do alot of things that an owner should never do. As the owner and companion to that dog you are teaching the dog to fear you to get what you want. A trainer can do these thing because when the training is done the dog is gone and does not associate the training to the owner/companion. Believe me I have made similar mistakes in the past. It doesn't go well.

Not sayi9ng that will or will not work but it drives me crazy when people grab a rolled up newspaper or switch and their
dog runs and hides and they think its funny. Why would you want your buddy afraid of you? Theres lots of info on the internet to
help you cure it though.
