Anyone dehydrate meals/snacks for whatever? hunting fishing trapping camping? just for everyday snacks?

I carry some heathers choice on the yak with me or in the woods, easy enough to have a good meal other than potted meat and crackers! or vienna sausages. Just want to do my own so went and got me a dehydrator to try. Maybe dehydrate some of the wifes leftovers as a meal.

I dehydrate mainly meats. Light quick easy to pack. I used to dry fruits. Gonna make me some fruit roll ups soon. Now that I got a new dehydrator I'll be drying a lot more now

My favorite food to dehydrate is mushrooms. When rehydrated the flavor is more pronounced. Use to buy all the supermarket had when i found them at a deal. Froze them in ziplock bags.

I got off my butt and bought one when I saw the fruit roll ups recipe in a video! thought that be cool to do.Then got thinking about alot of wasted left overs that would make good "out in the woods" meals. I usually have a MSR windburner with me in the truck or on the yak - like I said that be better than potted meat!

I make biltong (dried meat? like African jerky) VERY easy to do and I do that in a box I built with a little fan and a lightbulb. Got tuned on to it on an African trip bowhunting I did many moons ago. It is a great snack. I plan on carrying alot on a elk hunt this yr with that daughter.

That's awesome J. I'm gonna have to look for a bitlong recipe. Yup tons of snacks to make with scraps or before go bads. Elk is great if you can find buffalo near you buy a roast slice thin salt and pepper. Lamb is good too.

mostly jerky and fruits, not full meals

and I had to google heathers choice - thats not food man, you gotta find somethign better than that.

I did look into it a while back - and i seem to remember that you needed quite a peice of equipment ($$$) to actually do meals right. I dropped it there.
I usually go with mountain house and wise brand freeze dried meals - or MREs - if I need to pack something like that

Hey JakeDog, any update on your progress?

Today my youngest and I decided to try lemons oranges. The sourness of the lemons was intense and the oranges came up very sweet.

anybody ever make pemmican? high energy food. will keep you warm. dehydrate meat and grind it up. render some fat and pour the hot oil on the powdered jerky. put it in baggies and keep some in your pocket. you can add fruit and or nuts also before you mix in the hot oil. beef fat makes good oil. you can make a lot of it out of an untrimmed brisket.

I've been wanting to try this. I think it goes like: 1/3 berries/nuts 1/3 meat 1/3 tallow

you can use whatever ratio you want. need enough oil though to bind it all together. that fat is where the energy is. use plenty of it if your going to be out in cold weather

danny I will have to cook some up and let you know how it goes. Any recommendations on fruits and nuts?
USually when I make my jerky I leave as much fat on as possible. That there is great eating

I made some last year after watching a video about it that meat trapper made on YouTube. I used deer, strawberries, and coconut oil. Put a little salt and liquid smoke in the meat before dehydrating.

Semperfi- i was reading through this thread and got to the ? of pemmican from d.c., I got excited and thought coconut oil would be better than animal fat(coconut oil is the main oil in my kitchen)(i love it). How did yours turn out. The only time i saw it made, this fella ran his dried meat through a meat grinder along with the nuts and dried huckleberries. But he used rendered deer tallow and swore it would be good. HE LIED sick

adam I don't like a lot of added stuff. some unsalted sunflower seeds are good. if you can get your wife to pick em out for you I bet pinon nuts would be good. a little apple can be tasty. the idea behind it is a preserved food high in energy. dried fruit is mostly just fiber. haven't tried it but I but I bet roasted peanuts ground into small pieces would be a good flavor and source of energy.

At the end of the day it is what it is. I’ll take deer jerky over it any day. It wasn’t bad though. I learned to slowly chew it and let the oil melt. As it would melt the strawberries and smoke flavor would start to appear.

Thanks Danny. I'm gonna have to try it. I'm going to a "natural grocery store" this weekend their rump roasts and ground buffalo are on sale, so I'll be making a batch the next few days.
I bet that would be great. I think we still have 4 more years before the northern crop starts. I was thinking about it, we put red and green on ours so it's not much different. As you know red and green are packed with vitamins and other nutrients.

If your going to be outside all day in cold weather, nothing keeps you going, and keeps you warm, like the natural healthy energy of meat and fat. Sugar, whether its in fruit or just processed white sugar, is empty calories that wear you down. A little fruit for flavor is ok but the good calories are in that fat. Combined with the protein in the meat stuff will keep you going. Amazes me the rest of the world hasn't caught on to red and green. I bet a little added for flavor and fiber would be every bit as healthy and tasty as fruit and without the empty sugar calories.

So very true. Growing up even now beef, deer or elk jerky was always with us in the mts along with some fruits in the truck. Not much better than big slab of dried meat with fat. I'll make some and send you some with red and some with green.
Yup that's hard to believe. I remember living in Isreal some of my classmates were cooking I asked what they were cooking they said chile. Awesome, finally I get chile, so I asked red or green? They said chile ,I said red or green? They looked confused and said chili. I finally looked in the pot it was chili beans like hormel. Oh, that's not chile thats chili beans I responded. I had to explain the difference.
