Glycerin is better for antifreeze.

How much glycerin should I use per quart of meat and can that be bought at the local drug store and does anyone think salt would hender the bait

I have always cut my beaver, marten/fisher/mink baits, into fist size chunks and packed them into containers with pickling salt. Works fine and keeps it relatively soft & smelly in cold weather.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

enough to keep it wet. take small amount of your bait put in freezer for 2 hours and see if it was enough. I also use salt, do the same, put salt in meat and place in freezer to see if enough salt was added

sometimes I don't care about salt taste and sometimes I do in the formulation or end product. you have decide what you want.

I typically don’t set near any deer. When I do I am picky about what bait and lure I use. That being said I’ve got a urine set out now that has only been set off once by deer ,lol !

Golf ball You hit the nail on the head why I and many other commercial bait makers do not use or reduce salt in our formulations. We have no control on high deer areas.

According to my dogs k-9s have no aversion to the taste of salt, heck I always put some on my steak.

Just wondering out loud here, what would it hurt to add equal parts sugar ( or even brown sugar) to the mix ? I add salt to my mix as a preservative and I’ve seen where they use a salt and sugar brine of fish before smoking. So why not ?

Deer rabbits ground hogs squirrels attracted to salt. I have caught ground hogs with salted fish in cages in the early fur season. If someone wants to use salt no problem. I have. also I salted down some beaver hard last year. threw a piece to my dog he wouldn't eat it, played with it but wouldn't eat it. Now If he was hungry then I know he would have.

Isn't the idea to catch canines before they taste the bait?

If you are foot trapping yes. But other forms of trapping like with cages and DP traps the taste factor can come into play and be a positive. Also if you are foot trapping and the animal gets the bait out before getting caught and the bait has a bad taste, then maybe it will not work the set the next time around. all depend on the trapper I guess.

Jonesie I don’t do much cage trapping and I do intend to catch each coyote before he gets to the bait. But around here the coyotes are so few that I don’t want to turn one away because he didn’t like the taste, lol !
