We use utv's at work, for powerline access on right of ways. We put a lot of hrs on these machines in a year, and have not had any accidents. We do have a low speed limit that we imposed on ourselves. I have yet to see one of our folks willing to loose thier job, for a little fun. Used properly, utv's are as safe as anything. In the wrong hands, they can be dangerous.

I have a polaris 900 Ranger. We can drive on roads out here with the proper tags, insurance, and safety equipment. Mine will go up to 60ish and I feel that's too fast and it feels like it could get squirrely. I have the full cab and anything over 25 and you can't hear anything it's so noisy.

I borrowed my brothers for a running a few traps around his place this fall. The speedometer said it would do 120mph! I felt like I could lose control of it at 30 mph on the gravel roads I was on. He has rolled his once at least, but that is how he tends to drive. My BIL and sister allow their kids to ride like bats out of heck on their 4 wheelers I honestly cant believe that one of them hasnt been seriously injured or killed. People who treat ATVs and UTVs as toys are the ones who tend to have the most accidents.

Hi speeds on those squishy soft walled atv/utv tires cannot be a good thing.

pcr, Where were the accidents at?

We had 2 in Elk County over the weekend. Both apparently involved alcohol. The one got someone life flighted. The other one the person wasn't found until the next morning and had died from hypothermia.

I have a friend that has a new machine. He had a 3 inch lift kit and 4 point seat belts installed. He was making a turn around and was going 10 mph and rolled it. He and the front passenger weren't buckled up but the kids in the back were. My friend suffered a concussion and a hole in his arm, the unbuckled passenger had 2 breaks in his arm. My friend still doesn't remember what happened. Kids were okay! The lift kit made the machine top heavy so crap happens.

There was a husband and wife this last summer that were trail riding. A stick came up through the floor boards and harpooned his wife and she bled out right next to him.

JMO SXS are made for a purpose and I don't believe its racing. Your risk level of injury is not only what has been mentioned before but the equipment and accessories you choose. Some of the manufacturers have been sued and have installed safety equipment for a reason!

I have driven side by sides since 2006. As long as you have some common sense
they are great. Took mine this year to Colorado up to 12,000 ft. Takes some doing to get
there but as long as your careful things work out. Have always had Yamaha.
For driving around and property use they are very safe.

I don’t understand why not just get a used Jeep. You can pick one up used for probably less than 6k. They’ll most likely be street legal, have a cab, plus heat and air. Why pay up to 15k for a four wheeler with a streering wheel? I honestly don’t get the rage, please educate and help me understand what makes them superior to a Jeep.

Guns are dangerous too you better not get any of those. Same with knives.

Yup same road, about 6 hours apart. The second one they didn't find the guy until late the next morning. Both accidents had left the polar plunge/atv ride at the Medix Hotel. I've ridden that road in the summer sober. Don't really want to try it drunk and in the winter at night.

Because Jeeps are much bigger, and heavier, than a side by side. I did look into getting a mini truck first, but there's no way it would get around like an ATV or UTV. I also didn't pay $15k.
