Put a piece of that gray pipe insulation on part of it. When frigid cold, you can put 1 of your hands on the padding.

Have many spuds , my favorite is one Trapper Art used to sell . Top half looked like a baseball bat . The nob on the end helps a lot . What ever you get, make sure it has a lanyard to go on your wrist and use it that way ! I also like tips like these .

Eskimo or Jiffy ice chisels are around $50.00 and cut fast and are light weight, even can get a 2 piece one.

The Jiffy chisel is a very good chisel. It has a tapered or stepped cutting edge like the one shown in the picture above. ("I like these tips too" picture of the chisel cutting edge is black in the picture above). If you have the skills to make one, I would make one like the Jiffy.

I have a one piece jiffy like Mac is talking about. I don't remember the price, but I found it to be reasonable when I bought it. They are easy to sharpen which makes a world of a difference. Relatively light as well. I've seen and used various home made chisels but have never found anything to work as well. But most of the home made rigs I have used were very crude as well.

RiversNorth13 Where did you get that picture of the spud from? I swear that landing could be the one just a mile from my house. Oh and the spud if you make one. Use something for the handle that don't vibrate. I've used lot of spuds over the years. One I have now I used 1 inch rebar also some with 3/4. It works ok if you get the bar length right for the diameter. Make it to long and it gets a funny vibration very annoying to hands when you chop. The one I used as a kid my father made it looks like the one in RiversNorth13 pic. I believe some used base ball bat but I think he may have turned his handle on a lathe? I don't recall any bat logo on the handle. My father worked at the old Trane company and those guys welded up lots of thing in the shop there.

I have found that this type of cutting head is very efficient at getting through the ice quickly. It was made by the father of a friend of mine and I won it in a raffle. The one I use and have had forever is similar to this but about twice the width and EATS ice! The key for a handle is square tubing so the handle doesn't bend when prying anything with it.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Must be nice to eat ice cream as fast as you want and not have to worry about brain freeze.
