Maybe I am over thinking that part and that is why I always put in a hole...... Sure, in a week the fresh dirt smell may go away, who wants to wait a week before a set is good? These are just my thoughts and personal oppinion. Maybe I lack confidence as was said earlier. My season is coming bro an end here at least on land and I didn't get to play as much as it had planned. Next year I hope I get more time....I hope I make more time I should say.

Please explain a little more in depth your reference to the smell of fresh dirt.

The reason I am inquiring is my dirt holes are disturbances however the dirt that should have come out of the hole is not among the disturbance because I punch a hole vs digging a hole.

So you are punching, pounding, your trap bed? I dig a trap bed, bed trap in dirt and blend. What are you covering trap with? We may have 2 different ideas of flat sets.....I guess everyone may have different ideas of the same thing. I am not brand new at this but new enough to listen and learn.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I'm on same page as LAW DOG..but I still make a few dirt holes and it seems like a lot of my remakes are dirt holes I thought the added scent of said catch would add more appeal but I'm gonna start trying the walk through..

You gonna learn taday.....

I not sure if you would call this a flat set or a punch set but make what I call a flat set punching in three holes in a triangle about 16"apart with trap blended in the middle. Is it a flat set ? Whatever you want to call it,it works good for me .not the only set I make but I do use it a lot.

A hole is exactly what it is no matter the size. It is explained in the boo the dirt hole and it's variations. If you have a hole then it is a variation of a dirt hole set. A flat set has no hole.

I'm no expert, but I generally set 1 dirthole and 1 flat(compass usually) set at every location. Sometime the dirthole gets em, sometimes the flat set gets em. Overall I'd say that I've caught more with the flat set which is surprising because I was usually have more confidence in the dirthole.

I’ve always considered the urine post , the pipe set and the compass set all variables of the flat set .

I use a punch hole for holding and protecting my lure, I don't consider it a dirt hole, because it has a "hole", the hole to me has no appeal at all since i blend it in

Also I tend to set a little tighter at flats than I do at dirt holes

I know a guy that catches over 90% of his coyotes in flat sets, last year that would have been over 140 coyotes in flat sets. I catch at least 60% in flat sets.

I have just as much confidence in a flat set as a dirt hole.

I rarely use a dirt hole set, almost all my trap sets are a variation of a flat set.

I disagree. If I poke a hole in the ground under a clump of grass with a screwdriver to put lure in it is not a dirt hole set. If the hole isn’t visible it is a flat set.

Same here, I've always thought the urine post is an older name for a flat set.

That is something i don't do often is the urine post set........I need to work on that one, I only put one in if I see if there is a natural projection and a trail off the road then back on the road, still not much luck

I've never heard it but it's been my experience. I'm a fox trapper and run about 95% dirt holes, 5% flat sets. I only catch a handful of coyote each season but half of those are in the flat sets.

Could be the way I crowd the hole with the trap on my dirt holes which are made strictly for fox, no 10-12" set back.
