I'm planning on making about 10 dozen drags for my coyote line and looking for ideas or pictures for a simple lightweight compact, easy to build design.

The sabertooth design is probably the best design going.

Define light?

A lot of guys gravitating towards a lighter drag on 10-12 foot of chain. For coyotes at least.

I guess I should elaborate, I trap in mostly heavy sage. Most don't make it 20 feet with a drag. I also have a really good dog, in the sparser cover I'll use super stakes.
I just want an easy to build light drag. When your hauling 100 of them around it makes a difference.

You don't want to copy the Wimberly then. Great drags, but they got some meat to them.

Just a hypothetical but if your in heavy brush country and gotta walk alot...wonder how well hook drags made from half inch fiberglass would perform.

Weight aside, I like a more compact drag.

I don’t want to have to dig a big footprint hole to bury it.

2-3 lbs on 8-12 foot, but compact.

It's not so much what kind of drag you use as how much chain you use on that drag. The chain keeps the drag on the ground.

I know you want to make yours but I like the Sabertooth drags. The Sabertooth Jr may have been intended for coon and fox but I'm positive it will work on coyotes in the conditions you describe. It is only 1.25 lbs but is plenty strong and compact in dimensions. You wouldn't have to build it exactly like they do but with similar dimensions, sharp points at a good angle and the weight you want, and you should have a drag that would work well for you.

More critical than type of drag is the area your using them. Need lots of brush to hang up in and soft ground to make drag marks easy to follow. They just don't work good everywhere.

I prefer the JC Conner Tracker Pro with those spike tips. 10' of chain on a #4 DLS they don't go far. Our ground doesn't freeze up down here so you just need to follow the two furrows to the critter is located

Unless you pre-hook to the sapling, then they are perfect.

I can't keep my 1 lb mini drags in stock...BUT, some types of country you don't have the luxury of pre-hooking.
