Walking my line today and I came across a new badger hole. Saw tracks going up to it, they were not fully filled in with snow. It was blowing and drifting yesterday. I had to go back to my car to get my extra gear. I put a snare in the hole, anchored it with a trap stake. And made a dirt hole set with the badger’s dirt pile as a backing. I’ve seen coyotes check out badger holes before. It’s always fun trying to pound stakes into frozen ground. I’m going to have to get or make some drags this summer. I don’t know how long that badger will stay in it’s hole, but I’m pretty confident I will have it some time this next week.

I've been told that badger dens often have multiple entrances. I hope he doesn't sneak out the back door!! LOL

North Dakota has some of the best badgers in the country.

Good Luck.

I’ve been all over that pasture, this is a new hole. The only other hole I have seen on the property is a mile away.

He will be active with this nice weather we are having, day and night. I have set on fresh diggings in the morning and had them in the afternoon.

If he's still in the hole you should see dirt pushed up from the inside. Also, depending on your weather, he might be down for a few days.
Good luck and has been said, we need pics ! laugh

X2 Usually an open hole is an empty hole.

If he's in there and it's below freezing at night there will be a frost buildup around the opening of the hole where his body warmth is escaping. Lots of times they back fill the hole from inside.

X 3 If the coyote hasn't checked it out yet he is a target as well. In Illinois they can't resist a new badger dig. They plant both front feet in the fresh dug ground. Save yourself some digging and put the anchor away from the hole or he will be down inside to the full length of the chain.
