I always free fed labs.

We have raised labs for years! We feed pups twice a day and usually end up feeding a little more than recommended! This will depend on feed you are buying and the pup as well! You want that pup to develop at a normal healthy rate! Labs are amazing dogs!

I also have always free fed. My dogs are healthy weight and don't overeat. It works for me. I have heard of dogs that will eat themselves sick but I believe they must have been deprived at on time and they are making sure that doesn't happen again.

Wish I had more time to trap....

The labs I have had would over eat, if allowed to! It is strange how one dog will over eat, and another won't. Most puppies need the extra proteen from a puppy food, for good growth, with energy. Some of the giant breeds can have problems during thier youth, if fed too high of a proteen diet. We have a female great dane, that has been on adult food from her first bite. She was gaining 10 lbs per month between 4 months and 9 months old. Now she's slowed to around 7-8 lbs per month. She will eat as much as you give her, so she stays on a strict diet.
Labs need the extra proteen due to activity levels. They never seem to stop moving!
We feed our dogs two times a day. Large breed dogs are prone to bloat, so two meals a day can help prevent that!

Our lab will carry her bowl to you to fill but will only eat when she wants, it is always full. she eats about 2 cups, morning and night so 4 per day total, She is about 80 lbs and not too fat. for a pup you could just calculate how much that would be. For a 20lb pup that would be 1/2 a cup twice a day. A 40 pound dog would be 1 cup morning and night.

Any puppy under the age of 6 months should be fed 3 times a day if possible. Sometimes when working it is hard to do I know. (That is why when teaching I always attempted to get puppies in the summer.) Buy a high grade dog food with a high level of protein and fat. I like to feed puppies a high grade sled dog food like Caribou Creek or something similar. I personally like to see a chubby puppy and trim them down a bit when they get older. My youngest Lab is around a year. My two best Labs each lived to a pretty darn healthy 15 years old.
Good luck with your puppy.
Mac
