Due to current and predicted weather conditions all classes and activities for tonight and Friday have been canceled for Ripley central school.

All of Chautauqua counties schools and as far as Buffalo, NY are closed tomorrow. Free day to go ice fishing.

2 to 10 inches of snow expected and wind chills around -40.

Same here. Due to predicted wind chill temps they have closed schools here. 2nd day in a row. My son only had 1 day of school after the holiday break.

And then you woke up and realized it was 1 degree and no wind chill - what a joke. talk about getting it wrong, they were calling for -30 last night! No reason to have schools closed

It -7 here at my shack right now. A steady wind with strong gusts makes it feel a tad bit chilly.

I never once got out of school because of temperatures. My school did not have AC. Nowadays kids get early dismissals if it's going to get so hot and get out if it's so cold. What the heck. It's not like they're teaching class outside at -5*.

The world has changed. In the upper Midwest and northern state wouldn't be in school much if that was the case. LOL

They don't close down school for things like that around here. It is a great thing for kids to have a day to be outdoors. Good for you and let us know how fishing was.

There are lots of buzzards sitting on branches that would love to see a kid or two get frostbite(or worse) while waiting for a bus because the school did not cancel. I think schools officials spend as much effort worrying about law suits and covering the behinds than educating out kids.

You're probably right.

During the 31 years I taught high school, my goal every time a "snow day" was declared due to too much snow or too cold to go to school, I went ice fishing. And I usually took a student or two along.

It's lawyer driven, that's for sure.

Anyone here over the age of 50 recall a "snow day" when they were kids? I vividly remember the school bus ramming snow drifts on the way to school when I was a kid, with the bus driver shouting "Hang on, kids!"

Times sure have changed.

That is another problem with the world. We try o shield our kids from everything with out letting them live and learn. If we do a good job teaching them then we need to let them do the thinking also.

If it's cold dress for the cold so you don't get frostbite. LOL The generations before us lived and survived winter weather and went to school and life goes on.

I also understand the buzzards waiting to pounce.

We had to wait for the school bus also. I never heard of one kid throughout my school years to have ever gotten frostbite. Hey, guess what.. We knew how to dress for the conditions, and if we were ever lucky enough to get a snow day off. The first thing we did was bundle up and spent most of the day outside playing in it. The Blizzard of 78' was awesome. 10 days out of school and was outside making tunnels through all the drifts.

It was 2 degrees at my son's high school yesterday morning. I saw at least 6 or 8 kids wearing shorts as the got of their bus or walked in from the student parking lot.
Kids and parents may be dumber now than "back in the day".

I was going to bring up the kids wearing shorts and not wearing coats now days but seemed kind of redundant. Hence, this is why the little angels are getting the day off to prevent frostbite.

Frostbite for the under dressed would provide an educational experience in the consequences for the mistakes one makes. Learning that is as important as anything else in life.

"Being cool" trumps health.

For a certain portion of our society . . . always has been, always will be.

i can't speak for everywhere - but there are some children around here that cannot dress properly for this weather.
we try to help out some with coats each year before Christmas, but you can never get them all.

they had school here thursday, as planned, but they kids are off today due to weather.
