Last month I buried half a cat next to a log. Using the log as backing. Had two MB450s in front of the dead cat. That same morning a Bobcat walks right up there and puts his feet right next to the traps, stares at the cat paw sticking up out of the dirt, and walks away. That night a coyote steps over the log from the back (he didn't know he was supposed to come from the front, stupid yote) walks right over the traps. He stood there a minute, pretty calm for a Yote, then walked away. He came back a few times, every couple of days, to pee on the set, but never did put his paw on a pan. The lesson I learned from that was 1. Add more traps. 2. They don't get scared around dead cats as they do with lures 3. Even huge backing doesn't always work. 4. My scent has no effect on them - I set barehanded. 5. Try more blind sets in trails.

I'm not a Coyote trapper, only ever caught one (can of sardines!), I'm just a guy that puts cams over every set.

BTW, that yote walked right over a blind set a few days ago. It's only a matter of time.

There are no silver bullets. A certain lure might work well for one but not worth a hoot for the next person. Check from a distance as some get real nervous with too much people activity in the area. Don't over load with lure or bait as they can smell a lot better then we can. Sometimes a coyote is just being a coyote but you can be sure he knows it is there.

I would say if their that close to the set and walking by, they smelt it , loud isn't always better .

Jurassic Park is on the money with a hay set with this cold weather. I tried several this year with good results. We can see were they are traveling with the snow on the ground so some good urine or flat set lure on location is all needed. With snow on the ground and frozen ground a switch from 550 Closed jaw to #3 Bridger Dogless with 6 foot of chain and MB Trailblazer Drag. I'm setting on Fox sign but set will catch coyotes.

So question I've had my sets out since December 15 and still nothing So how long do you wait to relure and rebait? I've remade the sets a few times due to snow and switched up the looks of each set but I'm not sure if I'm reluring too much or not enough. I did catch 2 reds on another property so that was a little reassuring but no yotes. Thanks again fellas

bwhelz89 - the last coyote I caught was in a flat set from December 9th that I should have pulled a few weeks ago but is in a convenient place to check so just left it alone.

I believe canine smell a lot more than we think and was shown that last year on a dirt hole close to home that was flooded over and froze. I went to pull the trap but it was under 2-3" of ice so left it. A month later followed coyote tracks walking 30 feet off the fence row abruptly turn and walk to that dirt hole set 20 feet away, dig at the ice and give up. Busted the ice away and there was my set. I was surprised that a month later and under ice the 'yote knew where to go. Not saying every 'yote will do that but was a learning experience for me to leave set's alone for a fair amount of time.
