Have a chance to buy this trap.Jaws have a few areas with some pretty bad pitting, but teeth and jaws very solid.Base of trap is in good condition with fairly smooth surface and black paint chunks here and there.Spring has no temper in it,but is lightly stamped S. Newhouse,Oneida Cummunity,N.Y.Can anyone give me aprox.date of manufacture? What would be a ballpark value be for this trap,I know it has issues, and will use that for negotiation. Can the existing spring be re-tempered,and would this trap be worth getting old Newhouse springs for it?It will be a wall hanger for me but I would like it back to it's double spring origin.Jaw post nuts are free so changing springs would not be a issue.Sorry for the long post, and Thanks much for any help? The pan picture is a little blurry, letters are fairly crisp but not perfect.

It seems like you are trying to buy some parts. Figure in the price of 2 springs when you buy it. I am not a bear trap collecter but I think the chain is usually on the bottom, and if it has no temper it might have been in a fire. I am sure someone has more info on this.

Parts are hard to find especially when you are looking for items you need. Like Steve said, you will be better off to find two nice stamped springs, as the rest of the trap looks pretty good. You may spend anywhere from $400 to $500 for two springs, if you can even find them. The chain goes on the base, not on the spring. Find out if the trap has been in a fire, as if that is the case, the temper may be shot on the whole trap. The OC Community #5s and #15s are quite common as they must have made many of them. The OC Community's were made from around 1893 up until 1911 when at that time the OC Pat Date Sept 26 1911 pan model came in. I sold a nice OC Community 15 late this winter for $800, so you would have to get that one pretty darn cheap.

A colector once told me...if you have the time...and we all do ...wait for a complete trap and if possible buy the best you can afford. I have used this mentality and you won't regret it.

I probably shouldn't say this but does anybody else see that second picture change from a raised letter pan to a recessed letter pan.

Thank you DiggerDale! I was going to mention that, but was afraid that it would be the last straw keeping me out of that special home they keep saying so many nice things about.

No, it's not recessed lettering on the pan.I know you guys get this crap all the time, some newbie coming in and wanting free information.I just want a wallhanger,They are asking $300 Is that fair? Other wise I will look for a better trap,I don't want a reproduction! Sorry if I offend anybody.

For 300 bucks I would probably rip my pants pocket trying to get my billfold out.
I know that pan is not recessed (as none were) but that second picture STILL plays games with my eyes.

I think $300.00 is a reasonable price for that trap. Mark, I would have paid that amount if for nothing else just an investment.

Yes $300 is a fair price for it. Grab it. I may have a spring with a repair splice on the bottom that will work on your trap. It was not collapsed, but you can heat the bend and take care of that, unless you are planning on tempering the one that is on the trap now. Will have to look and see if I still have it. Best I can remember it had a nice spring stamp on it. If I still have it, and you get the trap, pay the postage and I will send it to you.

Nhousecattrapper, very generous of you on the spring offer.I will be glad to take it off your hands if you find it[I hope,I hope]!Picked up the trap this morning, got it for $250.Very happy with that deal and the trap. The guy that had it got it some 30 years and didn't have much in because of it's condition. Thanks again, let me know if you find the spring.

I got a Newhouse No 6 but I'm missing a couple of springs and the jaws. The pan is not readable and maybe not a newhouse. Oh ya, The chain is missing too. Anyone got some extra parts? I'll pay postage.
