Old traps should not be cleaned. It is ok to wash off loose dirt and rust using water.

Using chemicals, even vinegar, will lower the value of collector traps. At least that is the opinion of most collectors.

If I clean a trap, I'll use hot, soapy water and a toothbrush. Even better than that is non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner followed by a clean water rinse, and then either a blow or oven dry. Works great, and leaves no tell-tale signs of cleaning. Nor does it hurt the trap's patina. At least, it hasn't on the traps that I've cleaned with it. Try at your own risk, though.
