I caught a nice yote Thursday, but had to visit a friend in the hospital, so I had to wait till the following night to skin him. I hung it head down in my unheated garage. Got well below freezing that night. Next afternoon I went to skin him, and low and behold, green belly. Never had that happen before. I guess it only got into the mid 20's that day. Yote had been dead for less that 24hrs. I skinned and fleshed him, and put him on a wire stretcher. Then I remembered someone on here suggested using 50/50 bleach and water to reduce the green color. It worked great. Question is this, I planned on sending this yote with some others to get tanned ( Moyles) Is the bleach just a cosmetic fix or is this yote good to go? I'm not one to send crap to a tannery and then complain if I get crap back from them, I only want to send in top notch hides. Thanks

NOT 50/50(NOBODY suggested THAT much bleach)... a tsp or two to a QUART of water is all you need to spray it with..do it a time..let dry..repeat a time or two.. NO problems..

I vinegar will work as the bleach does also. Rub it on or spray. I use full strength right out of bottle.

Yeah, it seemed a little strong sounding to me too, so I dilluted it way down before using it. Okay so I accidently dilluted. Filling a spray bottle from my basement faucet is like filling a shotglass from a fire hydrant.LOL I think there was some bleach left in the bottle, It worked fine, I re-applied it twice. Is green belly a common problem on bobcats Lynx?

With the amount of mist one spray's on the bellie area, a 50/50 mix still would not hurt a thing on the flesh side!

However that concetration is higher than needed. Better to use a cap ful or two and then fill the bottle, it don;t take mcuh to kill the bacteria.

You should see no slips or problems with the fur. I've sprizted dogs and raccoons that were so green the actual leather was colored, I worried about them as well, when they came back from teh tannery(Moyles) they were fine and one would never know, cept for me. One certain animals sometimes you will notice a darker leather area where the gree was, but usually only when the green is in the leather and not on the surface.

Green bellies come from the animal's digestive bacteria breaking thru quickly to the surface membrane area, this can be exaggerated by excessive heat, laying on areas that are warm and no chilling temperture for a long period. It can also happen because an animal is sick or some what undernourished.

You should rest easy and just perp your fur for the tannery and enjoy it when it comes back!

Lynx them stones have done grown on me, pass a bad one every other year now it seems!! Been thru so many tests on the dang things I think I'm the sole payroller of most of the Doc's out here!!

Yes I plan on being there just as I plan on being at the others until some other more higher priority deal comes up!
