What's the avg # of squirrels on a typical job?
I'm trapping some for some friends there are 4 holes in the yard near each other. unfortunately a complete eviction of squirrels is not possible unless they move. They live near a ditch and an empty field and their fences are chain link. I have 3 traps set and plugged one hole.

The average I take is 9, but, sometimes it is two, and last week we took 56 of an acre.

No way to determine how many in 1 spot, too many variables in habitat, food, predators, etc.

Adam,

Most residential lawns around our area you usually see a unit based on a female and that years offspring at any given time. Often that seems to be 4-6 max. Adult
males can be independently in their own area and sometimes seem partnered up, as we discussed we really don't do much in this realm in the area, but folks call for
them and I have given advice and assistance in some cases, so I've seen what is on site and know many residents who catch their own and report numbers. The folks
in dense neighborhoods can get backfilled pretty quickly so over the course of a year they can have a number that seems quite high (15-20) but generally that involves spillover
not what is living on one site.

Trail cameras can be helpful, though the look of the squirrels is monotypic for the most part, no great distinguishing marks to use to count, but can tell you about activity and so
forth.

***

Throw Back, was that 56 rock squirrels or another species? That must be some quality habitat! You folks have the california ground squirrel which looks like our rock squirrel, more breeding maybe per year?

Justin, I was thinking the same thing. We own almost exactly an acre and I was trying to picture 56 squirrels running around my

house. Then my lovely bride reminded me that I had picked up raccoon number 40 today on a lot that isn't half our size in Milwaukee.

Of course the people bought 8 owl decoys to keep them away and it looks like word has spread in the raccoon community that tipping

over decoys is like golf. You accomplish nothing but it is fun being competitive. I can't believe that you pass on squirrel trapping.

People get really excited when you catch the red squirrels, but leave the greys alone. Every other call seems to be squirrels in the attic.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping there's not much left. Seeing how some are being ran over the past few days. I need to get better game cameras for sure.

adam m- Have you tried something similar to the Black Fox Repeating Live Trap- http://www.thetrapmaker.com/bfoxtrap.htm ?

See it in service on YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T31I9-4Amsw&feature=youtu.be

It looks like it would be easy to fabricate something similar. I make pigeon traps that operate in a like manner.

BigBob, we've never been known to be choosey. Ron, I can just picture a raccoon coming along and letting everyone out except the one

he wants for supper. Six squirrels at a time is right up my alley though.

Dang coon or something keeps moving the cages.

Today My neighbor Who I hardly talk to came up to me and asked if I could trap the squirrels in her yard. I need to invest in more gear especially those black fox traps.

Will a muskrat colony trap work for now?

Justin that was 56 California ground squirrels. There is probably another 10, plus the neighbors have a lot.

We have had high numbers of squirrels this year. I think since we didn't have snow this winter the young didn't die off the same. In contrast, the average skunk has had 2-3 babies when two years ago it was 6-8.

Its interesting seein how the drought effects the different ecosystems.

As far as prim habitat, he lived 3 doors down from the feed store and spent $1200 a month on peanuts and deer blocks. I can barely afford that in rent! They overwhelmed him though. My tech tagged two with a pellet gun befor I could even get a cage out.

Are you sure it's the squirrels and not a raccoon?

I'm using very small cages at both of these houses. It would've been a baby coon if it was a coon.

I'm talking about reaching in from outside. I had one raccoon who must have had a squirrel addiction. He ripped the cage off of the

wall and ate every part of the squirrel that he could pull through the 1 inch wire. Probably why we never buy anything but half inch

cages for squirrels now.
