Is this in the upper rooms of a structure? I've done a bunch of church bell towers with accumulations like that, a building for a state maintenance garage, and a lot of rooftop A/C enclosures. That's certainly indication of a long-term problem!

Ya I'd watch it I got histoplasmosis in my lungs and wound up off work for 11 months not to mention it almost killed me and now have lung problems for rest of my life. Respirator and goggles are a must.
Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Prariedog, I too got Histo. I dug out a wood retaining wall at my house. I was fixing up for my son's graduation. I was sick for awhile, now I take an antifungal drug. Researching, after the fact, I found out how dangerous it can be. I also learned about Ocular Histo. Glasses don't protect your eyes. A simple dust mask could have helped me. Who wears a dust mask digging in dirt, outside, at your own home? The plus side, I can educate customers, when they have concerns about animal droppings in their attic. Histo grows in moist soil conditions. It is only released when the soil is disturbed. If the Bat droppings are scattered around like pepper on food, I don't even try to clean it up. If there are piles an inch or more deep, I will put on safety equipment and bag it up. If there are deep piles I will offer to perform a cleanout. I worked for an Insulation company before I started my Pest Control business. I rent his suction vac and recommend him to reblow the insulation. He recommends me when they find animal sign in an attic they are inspecting.
