Hello guys. I'm looking to get a good pair of gauntlet mittens that are about mid forearm length. I want them roomy so I wear extra gloves under them. I would prefer them to be leather. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Alex

Cadillac or chevette my friend? It's an open ended question. Do you have a price budget, are you looking for brand name or custom made? If custom made, you need to ask about what they are lined with when comparing prices. I saw a gorgeous pair of seal fur mittens the other day, but the lining was as abrassive as fibreglass. You will pay more for shearling lamb or real fur lining, but it will be much nicer. You lose dexterity and feel with shearling lamb, sheared beaver is better. Bu T if you go with wild fur, did it come from an old worn out coat, if so it may or may not stand up to wear and tear depending on the condition and age of the skin.

Just thi GS to ponder before opening your wallet.

I'm thinking about going cheap. I want a big pair of leather over mitts basically.

Going to revive this thread as I’m looking for a pair for a youth and myself.

Got me thinking though. What’s everyone else using? Leather? Synthetic? Waterproofing? Lining? Etc

Beaver trapper, Why not go for beaver mittens from the skins you catch yourself? Tough, durable, and about as traditional as you can get for a beaver trapper. Are they not cheap enough now?

How much are the cowhide ones. They would be nice for ice fishing.

What would you recommend for warmest mittens. I want to use for ice fishing and snowmobiling and general cold weather.

Ogemaone,I have regular sized chopper mittens and gloves also. They are all lined,$9.95 a pair plus postage.
A lot of the guys that get the long choppers wear a light pair of gloves inside of them ,so their hands are always protected when they slide the choppers off.The long choppers are called a snowmobile mitten, many of the guys in Mo.wear them when they 4 wheel or are running boats in cold weather.
Ice fishing, snowmobiling ,trappingand just plain--staying warm.

Whatever you get,if you are going to work with them, make sure the seams are welted.

I got these from Tom today my plan is basically using them for snowmobiling or when Im trapping and driving a Four wheeler or snowmobile between sets. A pair of Jersey gloves fits inside them great for me.
