Go with what Tex Is showing you It's the correct way of doing It.
There are a whole bunch Of people that have the mind set when skinning coon that you have to make all the extra cuts around the vent and testicles It's just wasted time.
Cut from ankle to about 4" above the vent and then to the other ankle then with one cut go straight thru the vent. Two cuts and your done. When that flank and crotch fur Is folded down and pinned out like tex does It will give you about 4 more inches of length to the hide this will get you Into another grade. This Is called the money cut In the fur trade.

I like to use a piece of cardboard to place over the tail. They dry quicker and you don't have to use so many push pins.
And If your doing many coon a electric stapler Is the way to go.

What Tex and Beav said is very true. The only thing I do different is to cut my front legs off about 3/4 in long. I do not have to mess with them after that. They stand out straight and the hole drys shut.
And as far as skinning a coon is concerned, they are also correct about the money cut. I seen a picture on here the other day that was showing the coon be cut around the anus and lots of usable fur being wasted. The person that did this lives in an area that really can;t afford to waste size on their coon by cutting them wrong.
As these fellas said, make a T cut right through the anus and leave it on the fur.

Very informative post here! I have one question about the money cut thought. Beav, you said it should be made 4 inches above the vent and another site I was on said 4 inches below the vent. Are you taking about when the raccoon is hanging upside down from it’s back feet? So do you make the cut on the belly side of the anus or on the tail side of the anus?
