It works fine, never had a flaking problem, but then I don't deal with really cold temps very often and can see how it would. I buy bees wax from a bee keeper here and mix it and really like the results.
A "half truth" is still a whole lie.

Go to the hardware store and buy a bowl wax, used for sealing under a toilet bowl. This is made of bee's wax, or honeycomb. Cut off a chunk about the size of an ice cube and add this chunk to about five pounds of Gulf wax. Makes a mixture that does not easily chip. Be sure you leave the trap in the wax long enough to heat up to the same temperature as the wax, so as to assure good adhesion. Works for me.
A soft answer turneth away wrath.

If you run the temp right gulf will work fine as you will get a thin coat. I am not a big fan of painting traps unless they are water traps and that wont hurt....the gulf wax does have a bit of odor to it but if you are painting them it should not hurt. Remember temp is key.

Your BEST BET by far is to use the GULF wax w/ 1oz of rosin per 10lbs of wax.. you can get the rosin at ANY bowling alley...rosin bags.. rosin is a pine/pitch type substance and will increase the flexiblity AND adheasion of the wax. beeswax is like adding HONEY to your wax... it'll increase the adheasion..AND in many instances the DIG OUTS!! I've done it THIS WAY for right at 30 years... ZERO problems.. lynx

Will this work as on traps? If painting traps should you wax then paint or paint then wax? Thanks Paint THEN wax... paint wont stick to wax...PS I have PERSONAL info from a MAJOR trap wax supplier that buys his wax in BULK...and adds NOTHING but rosin to it..... Price/lb goes WAY up... VERY profitable item. lynx

Parafin is parafin, go to a candle supply place and buy it in 10 lb blocks. About 1/2 as much as the grocery store canning wax.
I wouldn't paint at all, but no need to paint and wax. The heat might melt off the paint anyway.
