Never understood the term "free" heat those $400 chainsaws use plenty of gas and oil beating up your truck isnt cheap either. Mauls run outa gas if Im using them and those log splitters blow hoses often. If you love it great but there is plenty of expense. I wouldnt call it free until it was cut dried and stacked by my front door.
Me Id rather run the dogs or catch a fish with my little free time.

Adam, the whole thing about cutting your own firewood was not engrained on me until the time that one of my best friends, a very
experienced woodcutter, had to grow a mustache. The reason being of course, is the chainsaw jumped back, and nailed his kisser. He
was extremely lucky. Please, you guys that can't quit cutting wood ( Because you picture that's the neck of your boss, ex-wife, etc.)
wear some kind of armor. I'm not going to be around forever and I need you guys to fill in the gap.

You are absolutely right on the not free part. It's expensive for sure. Chainsaws are only part of the expenses though. I mean there's 20K for a skid steer,2k for a grapple bucket and 10k more for the dump trailer. But I still like cutting wood!
it is not a stupid question if you do not know the answer

Me Id rather run the dogs or catch a fish with my little free time. Depends on your circumstances. I have 300 acres mostly hardwood in my backyard. Did 100% of my firewood this year with my 4 wheeler and utility trailer, stihl saw I bought in 1989 which runs like the day I bought it and my trusty splitting axe. Other then an unnoticeable amount of tire and brake wear, a dozen sharpenings of the chain and a couple more chips in my axe handle I'd be surprised if my heating this winter cost me more then $20. in gas.
