I went to look at a pond that man found a couple half eaten fish around last week. It's about a 3 acre catfish pond with only a wet weather stream close by. The owner had found 2 half eaten catfish on the bank 2 separate days. Both were eaten from the tail up to the ribs and left there. I walked the entire pond and there was zero sign of an otter. I asked him if he'd seen any eagles there and he said yes and that he'd been seeing them more often lately. I told him that was more than likely his culprit.

What do the experts think?

If Otter are active in the pond, there will be a couple toilets on the bank.

Yeah, we have a lot of small ponds up here that are often loaded with very expensive Koi. The number one predator, so far, has been the mink. Next comes the blue heron and then, probably raccoons. I think we've had one confirmed otter attack so far.

I had one customer who thought the culprits were human and I've got to tell you that a guy with waders and a landing net can steal a thousand dollars worth of Koi in probably 15 minutes. I just can't imagine a great market for stolen fancy carp.
