OK, I kinda remember reading a post a while back about some magic powder maybe that really helped in combing out burs from fur. Ive scoured the archives to no avail. The weather has been nasty lately and Im taking some time to get caught up on finishing fur, and removing burs is way too time consuming and labor intensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Bend a 90 degree angle in the tines on a fork and use that to pull. Works well for me.

It may be time consuming but fingers are best. Pull the hair away from the burr. Use a comb even with kids shampoo on the burr and you pull fur out.

Cockleburrs I just crush them open with my fingers, then remove them with fingers as well - very easy to remove once they are broken up!

You did real good RR3.I was told by 2 buyers I'd get only a buck more if I put my yotes up.I think I'll put up and send a few to NAFA to test the waters.I tossed some reddy yotes as well as mangy ones too.

If you crush cockleburrs with your fingers in my part of the country, you get sore fingers. we have a very hard cockleburr in this area.
I always remove then with my fingers also. If you try to comb them out, a lot of the time you pull big wads of fur and guard hair out.
My fingers hate picking burrs from fur. They usually will get a burr that wants to stick my fingers , then you get a darn sore spot from the burr.
If you have real soft burrs, they are not necessarily cockleburrs. There is another plant that has burrs on it that looks like cockleburrs , but they are soft. I know the name of the plant, I just can't think of it at this time.
I think it is called Burdock.

Ive got a couple coons that pulled drowners and tangled on the bank, they are like one huge bur with some hair on it. I am not kidding, Im going to guess, after skinning that the one has probably 30 or 40 burs in his tail and that many again on his back. Not sure if its worth trying to pull all these or not. Like Don stated, these burs are hard and sharp, I dont think many could bust them with thier fingers and not break the skin. I suppose I could try breaking them into pieces with pliers. Occasionaly my horses will get these bad in thier manes and tails and I wind up cutting them out.

I've got a curry comb that has some dull wide spaced teeth on the very front, seems to work good without pulling hair

break them into parts then they are easier to get out. just break them in the middle and use your fingers. i sell in the carcass and the buyer at groenwoelds im sure takes that into consideration. good appearance can mean alot. just like a job interview

One of my helpers picked over 200 burs out of a coon. What a sad mess that coon was. funny thing, even after the burrs were all out, the coon was no good. He had to much missing guardhair. I guess the dang coon had been pulling them out with his teeth. Man those things would sure be anoying when you tried to walk or sleep.
