What would be the better size cage for skunks? I think I have my traps picked out but I'm tore between those two sizes for skunk.
Thanks

I'd go with the 7x7.

Who's selling a 6x8?

I particularly like the Safeguard 7x8x24 for no other reason than it has worked well for me.

Ah...yeah, that Jim Comstock guy is always doing something different! heheh... wink

When you mentioned a 7x7 trap, I figured you were talking about Tomahawk but I might be wrong. But if you were, the question isn't so much the size difference but the trigger mechanism.

Double door, walk thru traps are great and having both pan fired and a wire trigger fired gives you options. Not that you need to many options when catching skunks. It doesn't seem to matter to them.

Just be sure you know how you are going to deal with the skunk after you catch him.

I have several of the 6x8 double doors. They have worked well for me for squirrels, skunks and possum on occasion. They are tough little traps and they stack well on the truck. I'm pretty sure that I own the very first one that Jim made then I ordered more and they were made by Tomahawk, even tougher. Very heavy wire for a small trap.

I bought the 7x7 double door and 9x11 double door. Can't wait to get them to use.

I guess the 6x8x30 inch panless traps Matt is referring to should be called the "Chitwood." We all have similar obstacles to overcome but many have variations in a plan of attack. Knowing that skunks can of course be taken in 6x6 cage traps as I have done it myself a number of times unintentionally taking skunks with Tomahawk 6x6 squirrel traps, Matt wanted a 6 inch high trap and liked the idea of a bit more width. As he states, that size has worked well for him for a number of animals. It should be noted that when powered door traps are made with a rectangular opening they are "traps of two different sizes in one." The stability from the powered doors allows the traps to be set either way, 6 high by 8 wide or 8 high by 6 wide and still function. The wire Matt refers to is 1/2 x 1, but is super duty 12 gage, tough stuff to work with, seldom used and incredibly durable. Since 1/2 x 1, 14 gage wire is plenty tough for squirrels and chipmunks of course, I have never been tempted to make smaller traps from, though it could be done.
