I'm trying to figure out the right hook for common snapping turtle lines mustad makes the 10/0 turtle specific hooks but they are huge , I wanna see what you guys are using ?

And WHERE you plan on using them?????

5/0 to 8/0 dependeing on the size of the majority of your catches. I would consider the 4x strong Gamakatsu or Mustad. More expensive, but much stronger.

in PA our minimum size is 1.25" from barb to shank and 3" long. I think.

About a 6/0 4x strong cirxle hook

Do they swallow the hook or do you hook them in the mouth ? How do you get the hooks out ?

i like to hook mine in the side that circle hook does all the work. the bite pull and turn a little and then they are caught. u get the hook out by using a pair of long nettle nose pliers but i like long nettle nose vise grips

I catch plenty of turtles on #6 or #8 treble hooks while cat fishing.

Used to have a long wooden curtain dowl with a fence staple driven in one end like the tip of a fishing rod. Ran a cord through the staple and made a loop in the cord. Once I found a turtle on a line I passed my end of the turtle line through the loop of cord and used the dowl to slip the loop over the turtles head and neck. Hauled it ashore with the dowl rod. Also used it from small bridges.

Cant remember hook size but about 6/0 I expect. Bait was chicken gizzard.
