Can't use them in Illinois for commercial wildlife control. Limited to 5x5's on body-grips.
Taken from Illinois nuisance wildlife regs:
"body-gripping traps powered by two springs and having an inside jaw spread no larger than 25 square inches may be used if set inside a residence at least four inches from any outside surface of the structure or set outdoors at least eight feet from the ground and enclosed in a tube, cylinder or open-ended box constructed of solid wood, metal or plastic such that the trigger of the trap is located at least twelve inches from any entrance to the enclosure in which it is set."
You will find in most states the laws pertaining to commercial wildlife control are not the same as fur trapping laws. Even if we could use 160's or 220's, most raccoon problems are in urban areas and no one in their right mind would use them due to the high probability of non-target catches (i.e., domestic cats). I've been doing this for over 24 years, and may have set TWO body-grips for coons in that time period. I won't even use bucket or baited cubbies during fur season, which IS legal. Too much risk for a PR nightmare.

Ohio was limited to 5x5's (155) as well for wildlife control work. I use a wire cubby for them while others use cubbies made out of wood. You can see what I do on the Sterling Raccoon Trapping DVD. My section is after the credits.
Now that we can use 160's I still prefer the 155. It is big enough to go over the raccoon's head but not big enough that they get caught by the abdomen causing noise and other issues until they expire.

Take a 5 gallon pail and cut notches in the side and throw peanut butter and dry cat food in the back and put grape Faygo pop inside and out around it. If its really cold out you will have to use shell fish oil for the stronger smell.

I use wood cubbies like Phil described cut off even in the front, flush mount and blind set them so that only something in the dwelling can enter the trap. If setting it over a ground level I drive t stakes thru holes drilled in the top. I only blind set them on nuisance jobs on the ground or over holes in dormers and anchor them so that the animal can't be seen. On flat roofs I sometimes will bait with the coni bear anchored seperate and well in case something went wrong. I can't argue with people who don.t use them. To me using them catches the target animal an blocks the whole until you are satisfied noone else is in there before repairing. You just have to really be responsible in there use because in the end you are. I like belisle 160s or 120s or 5x5s I use cubbies like Nathan described quite often for squirrrels. I use a wire leader and parachute chord so they drop to the ground usually in or behind the bushes.

I use cubbies like Nathan described quite often for squirrrels. I thank the powers that be that I can use 120's in wooden boxes for squirrels.

I can't use killer traps above the surface of the water here in my state. but I do use cubbies for snares. for control work and fur. I make them 8 x 10 or 10 x 10.at least 16 inches long. I hang the loop out on the front of the box, and the bottom of the loop about 5 inches off the walking surface. The key to catching the coon here, is not when it is going in, but when it is backing out. With a good loaded snare, I like 1x19, and lock does not matter to me here, just so the snare is loaded and shuts on it's own when triggered, down not out, when the coon steps through the loop the snare will spring shut, with the downward pressure of the body on the snare, but not set. when it backs out, it will set the lock when it goes tight. I am not looking for a neck catch here. I want the snare right behind the front legs, as I will be using a pole snare to grab the coon by the neck, Ever try to grab a coon, neck snared in brush or under a deck with a pole and then cut the snare off to take away. LOL Some of you are saying just use a cage, and I agree that is my first choice. and I think for control work most will. but if I have a trap shy coon, I can set the cubby with a bait that will catch the coon but not catch the cats, where a trail set will catch a cat in the yards. Don't use in attics or on roofs LOL

Ron,
Are you seeing damage (and if so how much) to the cubbies or will the coon use it for shelter? I think this would make a good article for WCT (hint, hint).
