Neighbor has coons in her koy pond and i have set cage traps to only catch the local cat population. I plan on getting ztraps for coon on my line that's slowly getting going. Question is have you ever caught a cat in a dp? I like the cats and do not want to harm them, yes most are mine.

Use a pull only dp.

Have caught cats in pull only dp's. If using a cage or dp, try a sweet bait and not fish.

Not as a regular thing, but yes, you can catch cats in a pull only DP. Trick is to use only sweet baits, and, KEEP YOUR GD CATS AT HOME!

the coons come in from across the street in front of my house and then walk on top of the fence and then down into her pond, she lives behind me. All the sets that I have made are in my yard along there travel routes. I just received permission from the land owner across the street to try and get them there. My cats surprisingly do stay in my yard very close to home, one was in a fight with a coon this summer and she avoids them.

If this was me doing the job, I would set at least three cages and bait them with one of Rob Erickson's baits that doesn't catch cats. The job would be over in probably three days. ( And if I was the cat owner, even quicker )

I would NEVER set a DP in any type of urban area. They catch cats often, even using sweet bait. Even with your cats and the neighbors cats kept inside, the chance is still very high you will catch a cat, causing a major PR nightmare for your company and (by association) all other wildlife companies.

I would bet someone is feeding their cats outside and leaving food out after dusk. That is a common practice.... human behavior is often the cause of many wildlife problems. If trapping the coons is necessary, it should be no problem doing it with cage traps. If you are getting a couple cats each night (non-targets filling up traps) simply gang set the place. Set 10 cages if needed. That way you'll still have traps working after the local cats get caught.

I have done similar jobs and used a dozen traps to get the job done quickly. I'm there to solve a problem, and each situation requires a tailored approach. I have about 250 DP's (for winter fur trapping) and have NEVER set one in my commercial wildlife control business.

I'm with Ron on this one. Shut up what cats you can and set as many cages as possible. But I would still use a fish type bait. Coons do have a sweet tooth but will choose fish over candy any day of the week.

If you don't catch the coon in a night or three, then the problem may even be the cats.(you know cats eat fish too)

I'm not for using most fur trapping techniques on urban work, but once in a while I run out of options. I've set snares for a body catch on top of fences the coons were using. Some customers get a good laugh out of watching us catchpole and cage the coon afterwards. Good chance you'll have to replace some fence pieces due to chewing, so be prepared for that, and inform the customer ahead of time. I'm very selective about where and when I use snares for urban work. I do an mini interview process with the customer and wife so I know they're onboard with this option and so they know what to expect. It assures me that they won't freak out and have the news crew cameraman out there waiting for me. So far so good, and thankfully it has been a very long time since having to resort to that level of desperation.
Have you thought about using motion activated sprinklers, pond netting, or electric fence to keep the coons out?

Well I just caught the coon. It was a big old boar and he was washing his hands in her pond. She texted so I ran over and scooped him up in my net. No fuss no scratching nothing. Just sat there. I released him next to the g/fs house.
