Couls someone direct me on how to set a conibear correctly? I never set one before. Is there a video or anything in the archives? I want to make sure I am doing the best way. Thanks in advance for your time.

heres how i do it.

put it on the ground, the way it would be if it was set.

pull one set of springs out, then, put one hand on the spring "eye", use the part of your hand under your thumb, and push down, hook the safety clip.

repeat other side, same way.

then, pull the trap apart, hook the trigger.

What size? The smaller ones can be set by hand by most folks. 220s and up usually require a setting tool of some type unless you just like giving yourself a stroke hand setting 330s.

Only conis I set are 330s. Lots of ways to set them. I prefer the caulking gun type of setter as they can be run one handed. I also have a large pair of the scissor style and these also work well.

Respect these traps and use a safety. Eventually...you'll be glad you did.

use a rope easiest and cheapest way. you just stick it in your pocket and walk down to your traps and if you forget one your not out too much. make a loop and this end goes over your boot then go through the eyes on the spring from bottom then top down through bottom and up through top again. give a good pull and latch safety. same as other side works on all sizes.

Get a set of tongs/setters. You will be glad you did when you get a skunk that is stinking.

Setting it wasnt the problem it was being careless enough to try to clear that last bit of grass out from between the jaws that hurts. Thats what happens when you get used to something you let your gaurd down and aren't as careful as you should be.

Yep, they hurt, LMAO..
Get yourself a decent cotton rope (not the one like in the pictures, I used this for picture purposes only..)

String the rope through the spring ends..

Pull the rope tight..

Put your safety hooks on..

Now repeat to next side..

Once you have it this far, the battle is half over.

Move the spring ends to the X point on the springs, and squeeze the top or bottom set of jaws together. Move your trigger where you want it, and line the dog up. First or second notch, it don't matter, user prefference. Keep your finger on top of the dog, and slowly move your other hand off the jaws, releasing them as you go. Set in position, and remove safety's..your good to go.

If you are nervous about the trap going off on you, take your rope, and put 2 wraps on the top side of the jaws (where the trigger and dog are. Keep ahold of the rope close to the jaws. Once you put the dog on the trigger, slowly let the rope out. Be very carefull not to hit the trigger with the end of the rope.

Note..
I like a loop in the end of the rope instead of the board, as you can wrap it around your foot, instead of steeping on the wood. In real muddy situations, the pice of wood will be hard to step on and hold in place while you pull on the rope.

Best of luck!
Dan
