How "Dangerous" is it to skin a skunk? Is it like one out of 20 or one out of a 100, that you get a "miss fire"? \:\)

It is not the least bit "dangerous," if you pay attention to the mistakes that you make on the very first one when your skinning knife pokes a hole in one (or both) of the scent glands. You will not make that mistake ever again.

There are several tutorials and photographs explaining how to locate and avoid this danger zone while skinning a skunk in the archives here, and on other trapping forums.

If you have problems locating these references, send me a Personal Message, and I will help you locate them. I know where they are, but you need an assignment to learn how to navigate this forum's archives to find stuff like this yourself. Okay? I mention this only because you appear to be a new member here, and perhaps are a younger, or beginning trapper.

Good luck.

Jonathan

Just depends....LOL. If you can skin pretty well and don't cut too deep or try to pull the hide off them, it's as easy as any other critter. I'd say about the same as a coon.

I've skinned hundreds and no problem.

pulling the tail seems to be the most likely spot to shoot a lil juice out, if it pulls hard i snip it off and pull it after the hide is off.

i've not dealt with too many of these little stinkers. but, my grandpa always very carefully skinned around the tail and then took a pair of side cutters and "cut the tail" bone. once the pelt was removed, he then pulled the tail bone.

the grump.
